Kuşadası ( Turkish for ' bird island '), formerly Ἔφεσος Νεόπολις (Aphrodisias) , Scala Nova and Scala Nuova , is a town in the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Aydın and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi Aydın metropolitan area, created in 2012 . It is located about 100 km south of Izmir on the Aegean coast .

Since a regional reform in 2014, the district has been identical to the district town in terms of area and population; all former villages and communities in the district have become mahalla (districts) of the city.

history

The story goes back to the 3rd millennium BC. BC back.

In ancient times , the city of Neapolis was located here, which was ruled by Ephesus . In the immediate vicinity of Neapolis were the places Marathesion and Phygale, which was supposedly founded by sick soldiers of Agamemnon during the Trojan War .

The heyday of the place began with the decline of Ephesus in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages due to the increasing siltation of the port there. Until the 15th century, the city was a commercial center of the Republic of Venice and the Republic of Genoa under the name Scala Nova . In 1413 the Ottomans under Sultan Mehmed I conquered the city, which from then on belonged to the Ottoman Empire .

The cave of Zeus (Turkish: Zeus Mağarası ) is a water-filled cave near Kuşadası.

present

Kuşadası is now a popular travel destination for local and foreign tourists. In addition to a large marina, it also has a port for cruise ships.

The center, located near the port, is a car-free pedestrian zone. Around and in Kuşadası there are several beaches with fine sand.

On July 16, 2005, a minibus was bombed in Kuşadası, killing 5 people and injuring 13 others. A Kurdish rebel group called "Kurdish Freedom Falcons" (TAK) had committed to the act.

beaches

City Beach , a small bathing beach with a view of the cruise ships, is located directly in the city just before the marina . Ladies Beach is 2 km from the center . There are numerous restaurants and cafes on the promenade. The 18 km long sandy beach Long Beach between Kuşadası and Güzelcamlı is gently sloping and therefore safe for a beach holiday with children.

Town twinning

Kuşadası maintains city partnerships with Batumi ( Georgia ), Bihać ( Bosnia and Herzegovina ), El Mina ( Lebanon ), Floreşti and Sinaia ( Romania ), Gjorče Petrov ( Skopje , Macedonia ), Tschornomorsk ( Ukraine ), Ladispoli ( Italy ), Marl ( North Rhine -Westfalen , Germany ), Monterey ( California , USA ), Prizren ( Kosovo ), Vathy ( Samos , Greece ), Visegrád ( Hungary ).
