history

In the Etruscan era , where Ladispoli is today, there was the Latin colony Alsium , a port of the Etruscan city of Caere ( Cerveteri ).

During the Republican and especially during the Roman Empire, this place was used as a resort by the nobility . In the 2nd century there was an imperial villa of Antoninus Pius in Alsium , which is mentioned several times in the correspondence of the rhetor M. Cornelius Fronto ; it is probably identical to the extensive ruined villa in Marina di S. Nicola. In the 6th century Alsium was besieged and destroyed by their king Totila during the war of the Eastern Roman emperor Justinianus I against the Ostrogoths . In 1500 a medieval built on the remains of fortifications , the castle Palo . The name probably comes from Palus (' swamp '), as the surrounding area was very swampy.

The castle was a fief of the Orsini family , who due to debts were forced to sell it to the Odescalchi family in 1693 . The new owners in turn sold them to Duke Onofrio del Grillo from Genoa and Marchese Carlo Loffredo from Treviso . Only in 1870 did it return to the ownership of the Odescalchi family, who are still the owners today.

Livio Odescalchi , who had been lord of Palo since 1881, renounced the castle in 1884 and bequeathed it to his second-born son Ladislao, who made it his residence. In the meantime many farmers, fishermen and craftsmen had built huts in their shelter. That is why Ladislao decided in 1880 to set up a consortium with the engineer Vittorio Cantoni to develop the area between the Vaccina and Sanguinara streams and to found the settlement that bears his name.

Attractions

Torre Flavia
  • The Castello Orsini-Odescalchi in the suburb of Palo is located directly on the sea. It was acquired by the Odescalchi family in 1693 .
  • The graves in the Monteroni area are two of what were once twelve Etruscan burial mounds from the 7th to 5th centuries BC. BC, which probably belonged to the city of Alsium. The remains of some ancient villas and traces of Roman cisterns can still be found on the site.
  • In the district of Monteroni there is also one of the few fortified post and rest stations, the Castellacio . When the Via Aurelia was rerouted , the service area lost its function and the building was leased and rented out. During the Second World War it provided shelter for displaced families from Ladispoli ; today it is a ruin.
  • The Torre Flavia is a ruined tower by the sea. Formerly 61 towers were built along the coast from Terracina to Porto Santo Stefano to protect against attacks by the Saracens . In the 16th century, the tower was restored under the supervision of Cardinal Flavio Orsini , but it was partially destroyed by a German bomb in World War II. In order to at least preserve the ruins, an artificial stone wall was raised. The wreck of a Roman trading ship lies about twelve meters in front of the Torre.
  • In the area around the Torre Flavia there is a marshland, the "Oasis Torre Flavia", which, like the "Oasis of Palo" , is administered by the WWF . In these areas you will find untouched vegetation, which is ideal habitat for toads , frogs and marsh birds as well as a resting station for migratory birds .
  • The remains of the ancient post and rest station “Statua” between Rome and Civitavecchia can be found on Via Aurelia, which was frequented until the Middle Ages. A small fortress, the Castrum Statua , was built on the remains in the 13th century . In the area there are remains of a medieval bridge, a villa and, in places, large stone blocks of the flooring of Via Aurelia antica .
