Flavio Orsini

Flavio Orsini (* 1532 in Rome , † May 16, 1581 in Pozzuoli near Naples ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

After studying law and obtaining a doctorate to become a Dr. iur. utr. the son of Duke Ferrante of Gravina entered the Roman Curia. Initially papal house prelate , he was appointed bishop of Muro Lucano on November 29, 1560 , and episcopal ordination took place on March 15, 1561 by Giovanni Michele Saraceno . In May of the same year he bought the position of auditor of the Apostolic Chamber and in July 1562 he resigned himself to Muro, on December 16, 1562 he was transferred to Spoleto , for which his nephew Pietro Orsini was appointed coadjutor with the right of succession in 1580 . Pope Pius IV elevated him to cardinal on March 12, 1565 and awarded him the titular church of San Giovanni a Porta Latina , from which he was transferred to Santi Marcellino e Pietro on November 17, 1565 . In 1578 he moved to the titular church of Santa Prisca , but kept the previous title as a commander until his death and was also buried there. From 1569 to 1573 he was administrator of the Archdiocese of Cosenza . In 1572 he was made a legate to the French King Charles IX. appointed. He became cardinal protector for France in 1573, for Ireland in 1580 and for Flanders in 1581.

After his death in 1581 he was buried in the church of San Domenico in Naples, where his father was also buried. He made his underage nephew Giovanni Antonio, the son of his late brother Virginio and Orsini's ward, his sole heir .
