Günther Pflug

Günther Pflug (born April 20, 1923 in Oberhausen ; † January 5, 2008 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German librarian and professor of philosophy. From 1976 to 1988 he was Director General of the German Library .

Life

Pflug studied mathematics and philosophy ; In 1950 he was at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Bonn with the philosophical work The structure of consciousness with Wilhelm Dilthey doctorate .

He was the founding director of the Bochum University Library and later the first director of the University Library Center of North Rhine-Westphalia . From 1976 to 1988 he was Director General of the German Library in Frankfurt am Main (now part of the German National Library ). During his term of office the introduction of PCs, CD-ROM editions of the German Bibliography and the preparation of the new building of the library fell.

Günther Pflug taught as an honorary professor at the Institute for Philosophy at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University . From 1985 to 1992 he was chairman, from 1992 to 1999 deputy chairman and from 1999 honorary chairman of the working group of independent cultural institutes (AsKI for short). Under his chairmanship, the Casa di Goethe in Rome was successfully established as a German museum abroad. He was involved in the German UNESCO Commission, the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and the Society for German Language.

He has published numerous works and essays on librarianship, philosophy and intellectual history; he was editor of the Lexicon of the Entire Book Industry .
