Reinhard Oberschelp

Reinhard Oberschelp (born March 9, 1936 in Herford ) is a German historian , librarian and bibliographer .

Life

After studying history and German at the University of Münster and gaining his doctorate in 1961, Oberschelp embarked on a career as a scientific librarian. His examination work at the Librarian Training Institute of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in Cologne The Bibliographies on German State History and Regional Studies in the 19th and 20th Centuries (1967) developed in the 2nd and 3rd edition ( Die Bibliographien zur deutschen Landesgeschichte und Landeskunde 1977 resp . 1997) on the standard work on the subject of regional bibliographies. From 1968 to 1998 he worked in the Lower Saxony State Library in Hanover, now the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library . During this time he founded and headed the Lower Saxony Documentation Department, most recently as library director . He became the first editor of the Lower Saxony Bibliography .

Together with the publisher Klaus G. Saur , Oberschelp created the complete directory of German-language literature (GV) 1911-1965 (published 1976 to 1981 in 150 volumes) since 1975, followed by the complete directory for the years 1700-1910 in 161 volumes from 1979 to 1987 . The bookselling success surprised both the 'inventor' and the publisher of this retrospective national bibliography : 800 copies of the GV 1911–1965 and 720 copies of the GV 1700–1910 were sold.

Oberschelp also emerged as a regional historian of Lower Saxony with numerous works in which he drew from the rich sources of the old holdings of the Lower Saxony State Library. The standard work Lower Saxony 1760–1820 was published in the 1980s . Economy, society, culture in the state of Hanover and neighboring areas (2 volumes, 1982), a political history of Lower Saxony 1714–1803 (1983) and a political history of Lower Saxony 1803–1866 (1988), the collections of Lower Saxony texts 1756–1820 (1983) and Lower Saxony texts 1820–1866 (1985), political sermons 1727–1866 (1985) and contributions to Lower Saxony price history from the 16th to the 19th centuries (1986). This series of publications was completed with the catalogs The French Revolution and Lower Saxony 1789–1803 (1989) and Steel and Turnips that were published for exhibitions . Contributions and sources on the history of Lower Saxony in the First World War (1914–1918) (1993). After his retirement in 1998 Oberschelp continued his research, so u. a. with a three-volume work on the legal sources from the Hanoverian lands 1501 to 1803 (1999) and on engraved plates from the 17th and 18th centuries. A rediscovered cultural treasure in the Lower Saxony State Library (2002).

Oberschelp is currently working on a catalog of selected images from the old holdings of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library .
