Wilhelm Totok

Wilhelm Totok (born September 12, 1921 in Groß-St.-Nikolaus im Banat ; † May 2, 2017 in Leverkusen ) was a German author , editor and librarian .

Life

Totok was born as the eldest son of the businessman Andreas Totok and his wife Luisa, b. Loch, born in the Banat. As this part of the old Austria-Hungary fell to Romania after the First World War, he grew up trilingual: Hungarian from his father, German from his mother, and Romanian as the state language. His parents sent him to a German-speaking school in the Banat capital, Timișoara , where he graduated from high school in 1940 with the Romanian state high school diploma. Totok studied German, classical philology, history and philosophy at the universities of Marburg / Lahn and Vienna . After the state examination and doctorate, he was a librarian in Frankfurt am Main from 1949 (from 1951 at the German Library ) and from 1957 as a library councilor at the University Library of Marburg . From 1962 to 1986 Totok was director of the Lower Saxony State Library (today Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library - Lower Saxony State Library ) in Hanover.

From 1973 to 1975 Totok was first chairman of the Association of German Librarians (VDB) and from 1977 to 1980 first chairman of the German Library Association (DBV).

Totok became widely known as a bibliographer through the handbook of bibliographical reference works he founded , the 1st edition of which appeared in 1953 and was published in 6 editions by 1985, as well as the extensive handbook of the history of philosophy (6 volumes, 1964–1990), which appears as a standard work since 1997 in the second, newly edited edition.

A commemorative publication in Totok's honor was published in 1986 under the title Libraries in the Service of Science , which also contains a list of publications. He was the holder of the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon and the Cross of Merit of the Lower Saxony Order of Merit (1st class).
