The Bochum University Library is a central facility of the Ruhr University Bochum . It performs central tasks of supplying literature for studies, teaching and research and offers supporting services. In addition to traditional library tasks, the further development of offers in the digital environment plays an important role. With a stock of more than 1.6 million printed media in the university library as well as licenses for a large number of electronic resources, it is one of the largest libraries in North Rhine-Westphalia . In addition to the university members, it is also available to the general public.

Services

The library system of the Ruhr University consists of 40 decentralized libraries and the university library. As part of the campus renovation, the specialist libraries are gradually being merged into larger units and some of them will be continued as the university library's on-site libraries. A need-based acquisition is achieved through the combination of local and centralized tasks. The university library is the point of contact for the central coordination of (e-) magazine acquisitions as well as e-books and databases. In addition, subject specialists for all subjects cooperate with the chairs, institutes, faculties and specialist libraries. The university library currently holds almost 1.7 million printed matter, over 38,000 licensed electronic journals and around 177 licensed databases. In addition, the university library advises the decentralized libraries on questions of cataloging in Aleph and maintains the SISIS library system.

Research services are another essential task. The holdings of the university library are documented via a number of reference systems. These include primarily the RUB's OPAC as well as the ECB, DBIS and the ZDB. The electronic dissertations of the RUB are also indexed and made accessible via the university publication server. A discovery system will be used in the future. In addition to acquisition tasks, the subject librarians also act as direct contacts for questions regarding literature research. In addition, information specialists are available to users from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

In addition, subject-specific and lesson-related as well as general training courses as well as courses for reference management programs are offered. The training courses can be found in the online calendar.

Since the beginning of 2009, the RUB university bibliography has recorded over 117,000 publications by RUB scientists and RUB university clinics. Publications that appeared while the scientists were working at RUB are listed in full. Upon request, work that has been done before and after the activity at RUB can also be included. The term publication is deliberately interpreted broadly. All work that the scientists add to their lists of publications is documented in the university bibliography and thus made publicly visible. In addition to books and articles, university publications, lectures, reviews, meeting abstracts, patents, series and magazine editions, Internet documents, radio programs and even software and stage works are listed. Since 2015, the University Bibliography team has been concentrating on completing the bibliographic data from 2010 onwards on behalf of the Rectorate. In parallel, the university bibliography software is being further developed in cooperation with the Dortmund University Library. In the future, publication data as well as personal and organizational data will be recorded and maintained together in one system. In this context, the automatic data exchange with ORCID is also implemented. The RUB has been a member of ORCID since 2016 and actively supports its members in using this service through the university bibliography. On the basis of the university bibliography, services for the university administration and the scientists of the RUB are offered. Since 2015, for example, it has been possible to automatically load publication data from the university bibliography into publication lists on the website of an institution or the homepage of a scientist, in an individual citation style. Valuable statistical data can also be obtained from the university bibliography, which will be incorporated into rankings and the application of the RUB in the next round of the Excellence Initiative.

Open Access describes the unhindered, barrier-free and free access to electronic publications for end users. A distinction must be made between different types. The Bochum University Library supports the green, the golden and the diamond path of open access publishing. It operates the RUB's Open Access Fund and the OJS and OMP publication systems.

The university library makes its premises available for exhibitions and other events. Since 2002 there have been regular exhibitions with a wide variety of topics. The art collections of the Ruhr University Bochum have been on the lower floors since 1975.

National and international projects and collaborations

The university library participates in projects at regional and national level and maintains close contacts with libraries abroad. It has concluded cooperation agreements with a number of neighboring university libraries and with the Martin Opitz Library Foundation in order to bundle resources and achieve synergy effects, particularly in the field of digital libraries.

By 2018, a database with primary sources from different countries on the history of historiography in Ottoman Europe will be established in cooperation between the Chair of the History of the Ottoman Empire (Prof. Markus Koller) and the university library, the sources from the period from the 15th to the 18th century includes. At a conference as part of the project in May 2015, a prototype was demonstrated and the scientific and technological direction of the project was discussed.

history

In the spring of 1962, three and a half years before the start of teaching at the Ruhr University, the office for building up the book collections for the library and the institutes of the Ruhr University Bochum was founded in the disused Klosterbusch colliery in Lottental . Rudolf Juchhoff , former director of Cologne University and City Library, was entrusted with the management of the office. Günther Pflug followed in 1963 and was appointed honorary professor in 1967. He conceived the “new type of university library , which was characterized by open access magazines, library automation and coordination. Right from the start, the university library cataloged its holdings with the help of IT. This made it a European pioneer in this field.

For the first semester of study (winter semester 1965/66), the facility in Building IB, which has now officially become a university library, was able to start lending. In 1972 the University Library moved most of its holdings into the old cafeteria on the edge of the campus (opposite the Bochum University of Applied Sciences ), which later became the storage library of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (until 2002).

In the summer of 1974, after five years of planning and construction, the library was able to move into its own building on the main axis of the university complex. In the meantime, Bernhard Adams had taken over the management of the university library. In 1975 the Bochum University Library became the EU Documentation Center, and in July 1978 the University Library received the official status of a UN depository library . Because both institutions are now making their publications freely on the Internet, these institutions were closed in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

The first catalogs of the UB were band catalogs, later microfiche catalogs followed, which have now been replaced by the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog). At the Ruhr University, a general catalog of the holdings of the institute and specialist libraries was kept as a card catalog (Central Catalog Monographs of the Specialized Libraries, ZKM). The ZKM has now been digitized and can be called up in electronic form as a so-called image catalog. Borrowing was also carried out electronically very early on. Another big step was taken with the establishment of BABSY (Bochum loan and booking system) in 1977. The system developed at RUB has been adopted by many North Rhine-Westphalian university libraries. The library has been working with an integrated library system from SISIS since 2009.

On May 1, 1996, the Slavist Erdmute Lapp took over the position of director of the university library . Since then, digital services and electronic inventories have been continuously expanded. The library follows the service paradigm and is based on user friendliness. To this end, it cooperates with institutions at national and international level.
