ORCID
The non-profit organization ORCID ( pronunciation : [ ˈɔːrkɪd ]) was founded in 2010 and has been awarding ORCID iDs since 2012. The name ORCID goes back to the "Open Researcher Contributor Identification Initiative" (ORCID Initiative), which organized the activities between 2009 and the official founding of the company in 2010. The long form of the acronym is no longer used by ORCID today, however, it is already missing in the charter. The founding members of ORCID include scientific publishing groups (e.g. Elsevier , Nature Publishing Group , Springer ) and research organizations ( e.g. EMBO , CERN ).
The ORCID-iD is a non-proprietary, predominantly numerical code for the unambiguous identification of scientific authors.
Application and motivation
ORCID-iDs are intended to facilitate the electronic assignment of publications and other research activities and products to researchers. This is not possible with certainty due to the personal names alone, as different authors can have the same name, names can change (e.g. in the event of marriage), and because of spelling variants (e.g. once the first name written out, at other times only the initials). In addition, identifiers facilitate machine data processing .
ORCID aims to make its identification number in the sense of “enter once, reuse often” the de facto standard for author identification in the scientific community, that is, in publications, research funding programs, peer reviews and so on . The planning for ORCID in 2010 was based on surveys.
The ORCID iD directory was officially launched on October 16, 2012. At the end of 2012 ORCID had 42,918 registered, at the end of 2013 there were 460,000 registered and at the beginning of December 2016 ORCID had issued more than 2,780,000 author IDs; in January 2018 it was 4.3 million, in April 2020 it was 8.4 million. As of January 1, 2016, several publishers for scientific publications (e.g. Royal Society , PLOS ) have a mandatory ORCID identification for the submitting authors scientific manuscripts introduced.
Structure of the code
The International Organization for Standardization has developed specifications for the International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) and established them as the international standard ISO 27729 . With regard to the structure of the identifier, ORCID also fulfills this standard; the ORCID identifiers therefore consist of 16 characters that are written in groups of four. The first fifteen characters are decimal digits, the last a check digit, which can also be "X".
Typical ORCID identifiers are ISNIs from 0.00001-5000-0007 to 00000003-5000-0001.
