International Standard Name Identifier

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 16-digit International Standard Name Identifier ( ISNI ) identifies the public identity of parties who are creative; these persons do not have to be authors. A natural person can have several identities and thus receive different ISNI identifiers. It was developed by the International Organization for Standardization as ISO 27729 and has been available since 2012. The ISNI identifiers that have already been assigned can be researched on the ISNI homepage.

Structure of the identifiers

The last digit of an ISNI identifier is a check digit , determined according to the ISO 7064 "MOD 11-2" method, and can therefore assume the values "0-9X".

The structure of the ORCID identifiers is compatible with the international standard ISO 27729.

Described objects

ISNI does not want to replace the other existing identifier systems, but rather to make them easier to use with a bridging function; in this respect, ISNI is similar to the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF).

The standard does not expressly specify what is meant by the public identity of natural persons. Different pseudonyms can belong to different identities of a natural person , whereas pure spelling variants do not establish a new identity.

The ISNI is also awarded to organizations. If organizations are split or merged, this creates a new identifier. The identifier will not be changed if the tasks or the field of activity are merely changed.
