history

The library was relocated twice within the city of Seoul: in 1974 it moved from Sogong-dong to Namsan-dong within the Jung-gu district . In 1988 it moved to its current location in Banpo-dong in the Seocho-gu district . In 1991 it was transferred from the Ministry of Education to the Ministry of Culture.

The library in Seocho Park consists of a main building and three auxiliary buildings. The digital library , which opened in 2009, is located in an adjoining building and provides access to over 116 million documents from all over the world. In 2006, a national library for children and youth opened in the Gangnam-gu District . Since December 12, 2013, the National Library has also been operating a branch in the newly built planned town of Sejong .

Information center about North Korea

On the fifth floor of the main building there is an information center about North Korea , in which the newspaper Rodong Sinmun as well as books and magazines are displayed, which are considered forbidden propaganda in the south. The approximately 100,000 documents can be consulted for research purposes, but are not accessible online. The center could be acquired through an official liaison in Pyongyang or by purchase in Russia and China.
