Konrad Eubel OFMConv (born January 19, 1842 in Sinning near Neuburg / Donau, † February 5, 1923 in Würzburg ) was a German Franciscan minorite and historian. His birth name was Sebastian. Eubel was best known for his reference work Hierarchia Catholica Medii Aevi on the popes , cardinals and bishops of the Middle Ages. The work comprises three volumes and was published between 1913 and 1923.

Life

Eubel had a twin brother named Johannes. He did his high school studies in Dillingen. Meanwhile, he made the decision to join an order . In October 1861 he wrote to the Franciscan Minorites in Würzburg, also popularly known as the “black Franciscans”, but was rejected as a candidate. He then introduced himself personally and was then accepted. On July 30, 1864, Provincial Franz Ehrenburg dressed Konrad Eubel and gave him his baptismal name Konrad as the religious name . On August 1, 1865, Eubel made his perpetual profession and then studied at the University of Würzburg . On March 18, 1868, he received from the Bishop of Wurzburg Georg Anton steel the priesthood . Eubel needed a dispensation from the Holy See for this because his profession was less than three years ago.

The newly ordained order priest was ordered to the Minorite monastery in Linz on the Rhine . In 1871 he was given the pilgrimage pastoral care in the Palatinate town of Oggersheim near Ludwigshafen. In 1875 the order brought him back to Würzburg. In 1880 Eubel participated with great commitment in the renovation of the Franciscan Church in Würzburg . On this occasion, in 1882 he wrote a 52-page commemorative publication for the 700th anniversary of the birth of St. Francis . Father Eubel now concentrated more on writing. In 1886 he published his first important work: The Upper German (Strasbourg) Minorite Province . This work with 408 pages was extremely highly valued. The theological faculty of the University of Würzburg therefore appointed him an honorary doctorate in theology in 1889 . From 1886 to 1902 the Franciscan was responsible for the publication of the calendar for the Catholic clergy .

Father Conrad's call had long since reached Rome. His order general called the 46-year-old in November 1887 as an apostolic penitentiary to Rome at St. Peter's Church. He remained in this post for 20 years. He used his free time to study and research in the field of the history of the order and in the Vatican Secret Archives . This was preceded by a special exam, which he passed in 1888.

Konrad Eubel worked for ten years in the Vatican Secret Archives on the work Hierarchia Catholica , a critical publication by all popes, cardinals and bishops since the 12th century, as evidenced by documents in the Vatican archives. With this work Eubel went down in the history of science. This reference work was colloquially called "Eubel" after its author. Konrad Eubel received the academic award Magister der Theologie for this work . A second volume followed in 1901 and a third in 1910. His work History of the Cologne Minorite Province was the occasion to appoint Father Eubel an honorary member of the Society for Rhenish History .

Konrad Eubel enjoyed a great reputation in Rome. He was also a confessor to St. Peter. Pope Leo XIII. called him on July 20, 1903 on his deathbed. Marked by his years, Konrad Eubel returned to his home province of Würzburg in 1906 and spent his old age there. Despite his hard work, he often visited his hometown Sinning and celebrated Holy Mass here as in Leidling .

Father Konrad Eubel died in 1923 and was buried in the Würzburg order crypt.
