biography

Origin and advancement

From 1816 taught and encouraged him later Mainzer Domkapitular Michael Schnetter , as chaplain of Stadtprozelten. He also encouraged him to study theology.

After his studies, which he began in Aschaffenburg and Würzburg and completed at the Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum de Urbe , Georg Anton von Stahl became Professor of Theology at the University of Würzburg .

Appointment as bishop

King Ludwig I appointed him Bishop of Würzburg on April 13, 1840. Georg Anton von Stahl was the first civil bishop in the diocese of Würzburg (but was then knighted and knighted by the Bavarian Crown Order on January 1, 1850; in 1861 he received the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit from St. Michael). He ended a centuries-old tradition that had only given the nobility access to high ecclesiastical dignity, and he was therefore not only watched with wait and see in conservative circles. Karl August von Reisach , one of his sponsors, recommended him to the king as "pious, learned and living faith".

Bishop of Würzburg

The Caritas associations were formed during Georg Anton's time as bishop . Hardly any Catholic family in the diocese was not organized in at least one Christian association.

1100 year celebrations

The 1100 year celebrations for the existence of the diocese reached their climax on July 12, 1841 with the Salzburg Festival and the associated appearance of King Ludwig I. The nucleus of the diocese was seen in Salzburg Castle and this thesis was attempted with the latest excavations of a chapel underpin and make clear. With some delay, another, more ecclesiastical celebration took place in Würzburg in 1843. Pope Gregory XVI gave all participants a total indulgence under certain conditions .

First German Bishops' Conference

The first German Bishops' Conference took place in Würzburg in 1848 . The focus was on the relationship between church and state and a revitalization of the church with the involvement of the laity.

Death at the Vatican Council

He died on the morning of July 13, 1870 during the First Vatican in Rome in the German college of Santa Maria dell'Anima - five days before the council meeting in which he wanted to vote with placet (in relation to the postulate of papal infallibility). He still very diplomatically refused to sign the resolution of the dogma of papal infallibility , which led to unrest in Germany during the Kulturkampf , especially in Prussia. His body arrived in Würzburg on July 18, 1870. His legacy is the central registry of the diocese that he established.
