Adam Friedrich Groß zu Trockau

Live and act
Adam Friedrich came from the old Franconian noble family of the Groß von Trockau . He was first provost of St. Burkard in Würzburg. From 1812 to 1818 he was Apostolic Vicar in Bamberg.
In the tense period of secularization, the various camps favored different candidates. According to the Bavarian Concordat of June 5, 1817, he was elected Bishop of Würzburg on September 6, 1818 by the Bavarian King Max I. His appointment was made by King Ludwig I on September 13, 1821, together with the appointment of other Bavarian bishops, and he received his episcopal ordination on November 18, 1821 in Eichstätt Cathedral . In the Würzburg Cathedral he was introduced as the new shepherd and his cathedral chapter on December 23, 1821. Even if many reservations about the election and the assumption of office Adam Friedrichs were expressed, he made great efforts in the reorganization of the diocese. He equipped u. a. the seminary with more financial means and with Carl Rutta (1776-1837), who was the chairman of the seminary, ensured progressive leadership. It had been assigned the former canon court of Conti as an episcopal palace .
The Wolfmannshausen parish was the only parish in the Würzburg diocese that was not located in Bavaria , but belonged to Saxony-Meiningen . The replacement of the pastor's position therefore meant a political issue, since u. a. the government of the Lower Main District refused to send Bavarian candidates to foreign services. It was only through an official request from Adam Friedrich to Duke Bernhard II in 1829 that a compromise formula could be found with the Bavarian King Ludwig I. The Catholic parish was an enclave in a Protestant country. The pastor of Wolfmannshausen therefore also looked after the Catholic communities in Meiningen and Hildburghausen from 1837 .
Joseph Heinrich Groß von Trockau (1766–1850), Commander of the Teutonic Order , Councilor , Oberamtmann and Chamberlain in the Prince Diocese of Bamberg was his younger brother.
