The list of Franconian knight families provides an overview of noble families who had their ancestral seat in Franconia or in the Franconian Empire or who owned castles and palaces and possessions. In the Franconian Circle of the Holy Roman Empire , imperial and secular princes, counts and lords as well as imperial cities were represented. The imperial-free knights who had no vote in the imperial circle organized themselves from around 1512 in the Franconian knight circle .
While some families became extinct in the male line at different points in history, others still have numerous living namesake in Germany and beyond.
Delimitation criteria of the list
Even if there are usually fluid or differently permeable boundaries to the criteria, the following delimitation was used when selecting the families in this list:
- Spatial demarcation: The family had properties within the former and also today's Franconia area . The family was represented in the region with at least one knight's seat or larger estates / fiefs .
- Temporal delimitation: The family was in the region before the end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806.
- Demarcation according to class: The focus of the list is on the lower nobility (not a pure high nobility , see list of high nobility families in Franconia ). Counts and princely houses are only listed if they are also mentioned in the imperial-free knighthood. As a landed gentry, the families listed here may possibly also have emerged as a line from the bourgeoisie , for example ennobled patrician families in large cities such as Nuremberg , see z. B. Patriciate (Nuremberg) . In addition to the pure patrician families, there were family lines in the imperial-free landed gentry and also landed noble families who had established themselves as patricians in Nuremberg.
Imperial Knighthood
The peculiarity of Franconian knights in the Middle Ages is their frequent position as imperial-free ministerials or as members of the imperial knighthood . Smooth transitions from Franconia to Old Bavaria , Swabia , Thuringia (see also list of Thuringian knight families ), Upper Saxony and Bohemia (also via scattered holdings) are often to be found (see, for example, the Franconian Empire or Egerland and Vogtland ). The knights in Franconia made an important contribution to the settlement and identity of the region by expanding settlements and building small knightly seats. Many of these families are related by kinship or ownership.
They stood in the field of tension with the territorial lords that were becoming increasingly important , such as the burgraves of Nuremberg , the bailiffs of Weida or the bishops of Bamberg and Würzburg .
The knights organized themselves in the Franconian knight circle - divided into:
- Knight's canton of Altmühl
- Knight's Canton of Baunach
- Ritterkanton Gebürg
- Knight's Canton of Odenwald
- Knight's canton of Rhön-Werra
- Knight's canton of Steigerwald
Vogtland knighthood
The concept of Vogtländische knighthood does not bring the geographical origin of a certain noble family expressed, but describes the corporate merger of the former principality of Brandenburg-Kulmbach landsässigen nobility. In the Franconian monasteries , where the aristocratic cathedral chapters were able to exert significant influence on the policy of the prince-bishop elected from their ranks, the "Free Imperial Knighthood" flourished. In contrast, in the Principality of Brandenburg-Kulmbach, the constant domestic interests of the Hohenzollerns , their independence from the nobility and the tighter political structure within the territory strongly opposed the nobility's urge for freedom and independence. Thus, within the country ruled by the Hohenzollern, only a noble society between pure country assiatrics and free imperial knighthood, the “Corpus Voitlandicum” or the “Vogtland Knighthood”, could develop. Membership in the Vogtland Knighthood was not based on descent from a particular family, but was only possible through the possession of one of the manor incorporated into the same family . These goods were distributed over the margravial provincial and administrative authorities of Bayreuth , Hof , Kulmbach and Wunsiedel . There were no Vogtland manors in the lowlands.
Listings in heraldic books
The older part of Scheibler's coat of arms from the period from 1450 to 1480 contains among other things 62 very early coats of arms depictions of 60 families assigned to the Franks. These are shown here in full, with the exception of six families who are considered to be pure high nobility and another six families that have not yet been identified (exact listing under: Scheibler's Book of Arms ). The Ingeram Codex also dates from the 15th century and also provides information on noble societies. In Johann Siebmacher's coat of arms book from 1605, there are 150 coats of arms in the chapter Frenkische ( see also Commons ), which are incorporated into this list. Other chapters, especially from the neighboring regions, provided further family names that are important for Franconia.
In his study on the development of imperial knighthood, Cord Ulrichs transcribed canton lists from 1520 for Rhön-Werra, from 1529 for Rhön-Werra, Steigerwald and Gebürg and 1550 for Odenwald. These lists have been fully taken into account here (details in the respective knight canton article). The genealogical works of Johann Gottfried Biedermann around 1750 offer an overview of the empire-free families, which he divided into knight cantons. Its registers for the canton of Gebürg and the canton of Odenwald are also fully incorporated.

Picture gallery
This is a selection of pictures that show family members and partly document their affiliation in orders. Depictions of coats of arms are still used today as a recognition feature. In addition to contemporary representations, subsequent centuries have made their own attempts to interpret the existence of a knight.
They also practice their current fascination as robber barons (see for example Hans Thomas von Absberg ) or in the world of legends . Nowadays the romanticizing and transfiguring view falls, e.g. B. the fairy tale king Ludwig of Bavaria or the instrumentalization in the Third Reich are particularly unpleasant (as for example with Florian Geyer ).
Representations of secular persons and their epitaphs

The bronze epitaph Wolfgang von Rotenhans in the Holy Trinity (Rentweinsdorf)

Tournament societies and religious affiliations
Members of these families are also repeatedly proven to be members of the Teutonic Order (see also Deutschordensballei Franconia or Knights of the Teutonic Order ), the Red Eagle Order or the Swan Knight Order . Tournament societies can be seen as forerunners of the medals (see also Georg Rüxner ). Societies with Franconian members are those of the Fürspänger , with the donkey , the unicorn society and the bear society . The Ingeram Codex deals with the noble societies of the Fürspänger and the unicorn.
