Philipp Valentin Voit von Rieneck (born January 7, 1612 in Rienecker Schlösschen , Rodenbach near Lohr am Main ; † February 3, 1672 in Bamberg ) was Prince-Bishop of the Bamberg Monastery from 1653 until his death .

Philipp Valentin Voit von Rieneck came from the Franconian noble family of Voit von Rieneck (see also list of Franconian knight families ). The eponymous place Rieneck is today a town in the Lower Franconian district of Main-Spessart . The members of the Voit von Rieneck family originally served the Counts of Rieneck as ministerials . The two families are different despite the similarity of the name.

Career

Voit von Rieneck was the son of Protestant parents, but converted to the Catholic faith at a young age. Around 1625 he became a canon in Würzburg and in 1635 in Bamberg. From 1642 to 1651 he was the Bamberg Vice Cathedral in Carinthia . At the same time he made a career in Bamberg and became curator, cantor, dean (1649) and provost (1651). In 1653 the chapter elected him bishop, but the Pope initially refused to give his consent due to his Protestant parents and confirmed the election in 1658.

At the time of the appointment of Philipp Valentin Voit von Rieneck as Prince-Bishop, Innocent X was Pope and Ferdinand III. Emperor. He stood for a consolidation course of the diocese, including the containment of the negative consequences of the Thirty Years War z. B. the shortage of priests. In 1672 he considerably expanded the orphanage on Kaulberg in Bamberg.

The coat of arms of Philipp Valentin Voit von Rieneck as Prince Bishop is quartered. The original family coat of arms is used in fields two and three. It shows a silver ram on a red background.
