Johann Philipp von Gebsattel (born May 13, 1555 ; † June 26, 1609 ) was Prince-Bishop of the Bamberg Monastery from 1599 until his death in 1609 .

Johann Philipp von Gebsattel came from the Frankish, imperial-free noble family of the von Gebsattel . The eponymous place Gebsattel is today a municipality in the Central Franconian district of Ansbach .

He was elected bishop in 1599 during the reign of Pope Clement VIII and Emperor Rudolf II . He expanded the Giechburg around 1600 to its considerable size. A late hilltop castle was thus created from a ruined castle, which no longer met the defensive requirements of a contemporary castle and could better be described as a renaissance castle . He began further monumental building activities with the later New Residence in Bamberg.

It was already considered controversial in its day. He is said to have a certain decadent lifestyle, such as cohabitation , and a related neglect of his duties as a bishop. At least he did not follow in the footsteps of his predecessors, who were staunch advocates of the Counter-Reformation .

coat of arms

The coat of arms of Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Gebsattel is square. It includes the von Gebsattel family coat of arms in fields two and three. It shows a silver goat neck with black horns in red. In the first and fourth fields the symbols of sovereignty of the diocese of Bamberg are recorded, a black lion covered by a silver diagonal right-hand bar on a gold background.
