Biographical data

Ernst von Mengersdorf comes from the Franconian, imperial-free noble family von Mengersdorf from the small town of Mengersdorf, which is now part of the municipality of Mistelgau in the Bayreuth district in Upper Franconia .

Builder of the residential palace Geyerswörth

As the 46th bishop, he was the builder of the Geyerswörth residential palace . After the renovation in the Renaissance style, including the old building, the building served as the town seat of the prince-bishops and was probably the headquarters of the ruling bishops until the end of the construction work on the new residence. Most of the castle was later used as an administrative building. After the collapse of the two Renaissance gables on the north side in the 1740s, the castle was given its current appearance.

Founder of the Collegium Ernestinum

The Kaiser-Heinrich-Gymnasium was founded by him on June 23, 1586 as the Collegium Ernestinum . It was a seminary with a grammar school, which was accessible to all "youths" striving for education (see also Ottonianum and Bamberg seminary ).

This school was located in the Carmelite monastery, which was abandoned in 1586; the Carmelite order took over the buildings of the Benedictine convent of St. Maria et Theodor am Kaulberg , where the order has been located again since 1902.

The property of the Carmelites, located between the Green Market and An der Universität , was later taken over by the Jesuits , made it their headquarters and entrusted with the management of the school.

Grave monument in Michaelsberg Monastery

His grave memorial has been in the Michaelskirche since the style restoration of Bamberg Cathedral. There it can be found in the left aisle of the church (see also Michelsberg Monastery ).
