Melchior Otto Voit von Salzburg (born June 19, 1603 in Eichenhausen , Lower Franconia , † January 4, 1653 ) was Prince-Bishop of the Bamberg Monastery .

Life

Melchior Otto came from the Voit von Salzburg family . He was initially Würzburg district judge and cathedral cantor. On August 25, 1642 he was appointed bishop of Bamberg. The confirmation took place on May 5, 1643.

On November 14, 1647, he expanded the then Jesuit college in Bamberg to include the faculties of philosophy and theology to form the Academia Ottoniana . He named it after his patron saint, St. Otto, whose grave is in the Bamberg Church of St. Michael . November 14, 1647 is also considered to be the founding day of the University of Bamberg , which under Friedrich Karl von Schönborn was expanded into a classic four-faculty university.

The prince-bishop's coat of arms is quartered. It alternates between the coat of arms of the Bamberg diocese and the family coat of arms, a black zigzag bar on a silver background.
