Johann Salver

Johann Salver (* 1670 ; † 1738 ) was court and university engraver in Würzburg .

As a copper engraver he worked for the Würzburg prince-bishop and the University of Würzburg . In this context he made a series of portraits of the bishops going back to the founding time of the diocese . The portraits were retroactively assigned episcopal coats of arms even in the early days of the diocese, but these rather originate from the ideas of the 18th century and distort the historical development of family and episcopal coats of arms.

A view of the city of Würzburg sketched out by Balthasar Neumann brought Salver as a copper engraving into the doctoral thesis of Baron Franz Wilhelm von Reitzenstein, published in 1723. The Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Greiffenclau zu Vollraths had the engraving plates made by Salver for a price document written in 1712 by the Würzburg Councilor Johann Valentin Kirchgeßner for the Prince-Bishop's birthday based on drawings by, among others, Wolfgang Högler and in a new one made by Servatius Arend , now in the Museum for Franconia , build a writing cupboard (the largest panel in the tabernacle door shows the portrait of the Prince-Bishop in the form of a sun shining over the capital and residence city of Würzburg).

The son Johann Octavian Salver, known as a genealogist, came from the third marriage .
