Neidhardt von Thüngen , also Neithard, Neidhart or Latinized Neidhardus (* May 1, 1545 probably Wüstensachsen (Rhön); † December 26, 1598 in Würzburg ), was Prince-Bishop of the Bamberg Monastery from 1591 until his death in 1598 .

Biographical data

Neidhardt is one of the co-founders of the Juliusspital in Würzburg , along with the Würzburg bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn . In his later reform efforts he was in line with the Würzburg bishop. He was Rector Magnificus of the University of Würzburg and Provost of the Cathedral in Würzburg. In the time of Pope Clement XIII. and Emperor Rudolf II , he was elected Bishop of Bamberg in 1591. He was a driving force of the Counter Reformation , whose efforts collapsed under his successor Johann Philipp von Gebsattel . Under his reign, the witch trials began in Bamberg in 1595 .

His grave memorial has been in the left aisle of St. Michael's Church since the style restoration of Bamberg Cathedral .
