history

Until the 16th century

On April 19, 788, Thüngen was first mentioned in a document. In Codex Eberhardi it says:

"Manto comes et frater eius Megingoz tradiderunt sancto Bonifacio bona sua in his locis: Isinhusen, Wanchei, Heselere, Tungede, Binizfelt, Hoholtesheim, Steti, Bucheled."

Until around 1200, the place was under the rule of the Counts of Henneberg . After their extinction, the rule was taken over by a knight family who later named themselves after the place Herren von Thüngen . The history of Thüngen is closely linked to the history of this noble family. Later this family was a member of the Franconian knight circle .

In 1366 a Thüngen citizen was first mentioned in a document and in 1419 the first village regulation was issued. In 1465 Thüngen was elevated to town status, which allowed fortification with walls and towers as well as a town constitution. Guilds could be introduced and weekly markets could be held. From 1551 the Reformation was finally introduced with the approval of the rule , which led to considerable disputes between the denominations over the next few centuries - especially since part of the village came under the rule of the Prince-Bishop in Würzburg (administered by the Juliusspital ) during the Thirty Years' War . A rural Jewish community emerged in the 16th century.

19th and 20th centuries

On June 28, 1814, Thüngen was awarded to the Kingdom of Bavaria in connection with the Napoleonic Wars . In 1825 the guild system had to be stopped. The town charter was never officially revoked. The Thüngen Castle Brewery, which still exists today, was founded in 1846 by Wilhelm, Wolfgang and Hanskarl von Thüngen. After the completion of the Werntal Railway , the first train ran through Thüngen on April 16, 1879.

In the presence of Prince Ludwig of Bavaria , the Ludwigslinde was planted on May 18, 1892 on the plan square.

In 1923, at an event organized by the federal government of Bavaria and the Reich, there were disputes with village residents in which a worker was killed.

Of the 152 Jewish residents remaining in 1933, many emigrated by 1940, but at least 50 residents were deported and murdered.

The Markt Thüngen, the Markt Zellingen and the communities Himmelstadt and Retzstadt have been part of the Zellingen administrative community since 1978 .

Above (in silver) the coat of arms of the Freiherren von Thüngen Lutz'scher line, below in red a silver, six-spoke cogwheel as a symbol for the local industry (and thus also for the trade) between two golden ears as a reference to agriculture in the community . Culture and sights

Buildings

Thüngen Castle
Burgsinner Castle
Blue tower

East of the main street in a somewhat overgrown park is the “Burgschloss” ( 49 ° 56 ′ 32.3 ″  N , 9 ° 51 ′ 31.3 ″  E ) from the 16th century, with the “Spitalschloss” ( 49 ° 56 ′ 32.3 ″  N , 9 ° 51 ′ 33.1 ″  E ) (also from the 16th century, but rebuilt and expanded in the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style), both of which are inhabited by families of the von Thüngen barons . To the south of it is the "Old Stock", a remnant of the early medieval castle complex. The "Burgsinner Schloss" west of the main street (also from the 16th century) serves mainly economic purposes (estate management, castle brewery).

From the Blue Tower, named after its former (blue) slate roof ( 49 ° 55 ′ 32.6 ″  N , 9 ° 49 ′ 53.2 ″  E ), only remains of the wall are preserved. It was built at the beginning of modern times to monitor shipping on the Main and two old roads and is located in a wood on the road to Retzbach; It can be reached from the Main hiking trail via a short, narrow path marked with a blue tower symbol.

The Protestant St. George's Church ( picture ) in the center of the village was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and was due to property claims of the Catholic. Juliusspital was not rebuilt until the 19th century. Inside there are worth seeing tombstones of the von Thüngen family. The town hall from the Wilhelminian era is also located on “Planplatz” .

The former synagogue on Obergasse was damaged in 1938. After the war it was sold to a GDR refugee who ran a hand weaving mill; and has now been converted into a residential building. A memorial plaque was put up in November 2007.

On the Wern there is a historical weir (used to irrigate the meadows until the 1950s) and the “Waaghäuschen” (former cattle scale).
