The Waigolshausen – Gemünden line , also known as the Werntalbahn , is a single-track electrified main line in Bavaria that has been used primarily for freight traffic since 1976. It runs in Lower Franconia from Waigolshausen through the Werntal via Arnstein to Gemünden am Main .
history
On July 1, 1854, the Schweinfurt – Würzburg line was put into operation as a section of the Ludwig West Railway , which was extended to Aschaffenburg that same year . Despite the detour that was necessary to connect Würzburg , this route was given priority over the direct route through the Werntal, which was only opened on May 15, 1879. The route was particularly important in regional freight and passenger traffic . However, the latter decreased more and more in the second half of the 20th century, finally it was completely discontinued on May 30, 1976. However, the Werntalbahn has never lost its importance in freight transport. As a bypass of the Würzburg junction, it is still very busy. For this reason, it was electrified in 1971 together with the Bamberg - Waigolshausen railway line (the Waigolshausen - Rottendorf line was switched to electrical operation for the 1972 summer timetable) and extensively renovated and modernized from 2002 onwards.
passenger traffic
The Werntalbahn is temporarily used by the Main-Spessart-Express Frankfurt (Main) - Gemünden - Schweinfurt - Bamberg : on Saturdays and Sundays, two pairs of trains are on their way between Gemünden and Schweinfurt without the detour via Würzburg ; However, there is no stop at the stations on the Werntalbahn.
Route
To the south of Waigolshausen station, the Werntalbahn runs out of the main line from Schweinfurt to Würzburg and leads down into the Werntal. First left, then right of the Wern, the route leads to Arnstein, where it bends towards the southwest. On the southern slope of the valley, the route continues to Stetten , where it curves in a north-westerly direction. Shortly after Stetten, the B 26, which runs mostly parallel to this point, also leaves the Werntal in the direction of Karlstadt. From Eußenheim , the Wern has to be crossed several times due to its bends before the line meets the Main-Spessart Railway from Würzburg in Wernfeld , with which it is not merged, but runs parallel to Gemünden (Main) .
