Wernfeld am Main is a district of Gemünden am Main in the Lower Franconian district of Main-Spessart with a little over 1000 inhabitants.

geography

The parish village of Wernfeld is on the right side of the Main, approx. 10 km north of Karlstadt in the direction of Gemünden am Main . The village is located at the mouth of the Wern , from where the place gets its name.

history

The town was founded between 600 and 700 at the time of the second Frankish settlement wave. Wernfeld is mentioned in writing for the first time in an exchange document with Schönrain Abbey. The prince-bishops of Würzburg were also landowners here, as were the powerful Counts of Rieneck and the old Franconian noble family of Thüngen .

Wernfeld used to be a relatively poor place. The residents made their living mainly from fishing, sheep-making, broom binding and basket weaving, and the manufacture of pottery. After the Second World War , Wernfeld grew, especially due to the designated new building areas. Most of the inhabitants of Wernfeld belong to the Catholic denomination.

On January 1, 1976, the previously independent municipality was incorporated into the city of Gemünden am Main.

traffic

Located directly on the B26 , Wernfeld is well connected to the transport network. State road 2301 begins in Wernfeld and leads back to federal road 26 in Stetten.

Wernfeld is connected to the rail network through a stop on the Main-Spessart-Bahn ( Würzburg - Hanau ). The stop is served by the regional train, until December 2015 also by the regional express. The Wern Valley Railway from Waigolshausen , which has only been used for freight traffic since 1976 , also runs through Wernfeld . The summer bicycle train is an exception, although it does not stop on the Werntalbahn route.

In 1484 the first church was consecrated in Wernfeld. In 1614, at the time of the Franconian counter-reformer, Prince - Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn (1573-1617), the church was expanded. After the Second World War it had become too small for the place and it was decided to build a new church, which was built in 1969. The new church received the patronage " Mariae Himmelfahrt ". The baptismal font is located in a chapel in the entrance area . Inside the church, the red Wern fields are sandstone created altar , the ambo and the tabernacle at the center. A parish hall was set up under the church. However, the bells still ring in the tower of the old church during services. The tapered roof helmet is also known as the “ real hood ”. The old Wernfeld church was desecrated after moving to the new church. In the years 2000 to 2004 it was restored through the initiative of a development association (founded in 1996) and the participation of the Diocese of Würzburg. It is now used for cultural events, club and family celebrations.
