Swell:

The Bamberg – Rottendorf railway is a double-track, electrified main line in Bavaria . It is 92.2 kilometers long and as part of the former Ludwigs-Westbahn runs from Bamberg via Haßfurt and Schweinfurt to Rottendorf near Würzburg . The route between Bamberg and Schweinfurt runs largely along the Main .

history

Opening dates

The route was built from 1852 to 1854 in three stages, starting from Bamberg; the concession was granted by the Bavarian law of May 23, 1846

  • August 1, 1852: Bamberg– Haßfurt
  • November 3, 1852: Haßfurt – Schweinfurt
  • July 1, 1854: Schweinfurt – Würzburg

In the further development of the route, increased traffic volumes made it necessary to expand capacity several times:

  • 1897: Two-track expansion Schweinfurt– Waigolshausen
  • 1905 to 1908: Two-track expansion Bamberg – Schweinfurt and Waigolshausen – Rottendorf

traffic

Before the completion of the Fürth – Würzburg railway via Kitzingen , Neustadt an der Aisch and Fürth , which was initially not realized due to the difficult terrain in the Steigerwald area , the eastern part of the Ludwigs-Westbahn was of great importance in east-west long-distance traffic. After the direct line was built in 1865, the Bamberg – Schweinfurt section was only important in regional and local transport. In 1884 Schweinfurt became part of the Stuttgart – Berlin express train connection via Würzburg and Erfurt. This traffic came to a standstill in 1945, was resumed briefly in 1993 and stopped again after a few years. Since then, the Schweinfurt – Rottendorf section has again been without long-distance passenger transport.

Electrification and expansion

In 1971 and 1972 the line was electrified in two stages :

  • September 22, 1971: Waigolshausen – Bamberg
  • May 26, 1972: Rottendorf – Waigolshausen

In 1978, as on many lines in the 1970s and 1980s, fast regional traffic was introduced, which was accompanied by the closure of numerous train stations and stops. After reunification, interregional trains on the Stuttgart- Würzburg- Erfurt route ran until 2001 .

Tariff zones

The station building of Seligenstadt (b Würzburg)
A regional train between Seligenstadt (near Würzburg) and Rottendorf
A regional shuttle of the Erfurter Bahn at the Schweinfurt city station

Parts of the route are integrated into the Verkehrsverbund Mainfranken (VVM) and the Verkehrsverbund Greater Nuremberg (VGN). The VVM tariff applies between Rottendorf and Bergtheim . The VGN tariff has been in effect between Haßfurt and Bamberg since January 1, 2018 after the Haßberge district was included in the association. The tariffs of Deutsche Bahn AG apply to journeys in and out of the two networks, as well as journeys on the Bergtheim – Haßfurt route . There are plans for the districts of Schweinfurt and Haßberge to join the VVM. This means that the Rottendorf – Ebelsbach-Eltmann route would be completely integrated into the VVM.

Transport offer

(Status: timetable year 2019/20) Regional Express trains run between Würzburg and Bamberg in a so-called "overlapping two-hour cycle". This means that two lines that run every two hours complement each other by overlapping to form an hourly service. Specifically, these are the following lines:

  • Frankfurt – Aschaffenburg – Würzburg – Schweinfurt – Haßfurt – Bamberg
  • Würzburg – Schweinfurt – Haßfurt– Bamberg– Forchheim (Oberfr) - Erlangen –Fürth (Bay) - Nuremberg

Part of this concept is that a regional express hourly service is offered on all main routes along the Würzburg – Hof axis. With the possibility of changing trains in Bamberg, there are hourly connections to Hof and Bayreuth, via Coburg to Sonneberg and to Nuremberg.

The regional express on the Würzburg – Schweinfurt – Bad Kissingen / MellrichstadtSuhl – Erfurt route runs every two hours between Würzburg and Schweinfurt .

The last-mentioned line ( Mainfranken-Thüringen-Express ) is served by tilting technology trains of the 612 series due to its winding route , mostly in triple traction. The Twindexx Vario double-decker multiple units are currently operating on the Frankfurt – Würzburg – Bamberg RE line . On the Nuremberg – Bamberg – Würzburg line, the Franken-Thuringia Express runs with class 442 railcars . At the weekend, a regional express train, especially for cyclists, runs twice a day from Bamberg to Aschaffenburg and back on the section between Bamberg and Waigolshausen.

Regional train trains also add to the regional express offer. The hourly line (Schlüchtern–) Gemünden – Würzburg – Bamberg is offered. The trains end every two hours at the Schweinfurt city station on the weekend. On the Haßfurt – Bamberg and Würzburg – Schweinfurt Stadt section, amplifier trips operate at peak times, so that all stops are served every half hour. This means that up to four trains per hour and direction run between Würzburg and Schweinfurt. Since December 2010, the regional rail connections have been served almost exclusively by Alstom Coradia Continental vehicles. Regional trains with class 425 are also on the road for the amplifier trips.

The Erfurt Railway has been running in the so-called "Kissinger Stern" since December 2004. The trains coming from Bad Kissingen and Meiningen , known as Unterfranken-Shuttle , have since been tied through the Schweinfurt main train station to Schweinfurt Stadt, where a new head platform was built. The Erfurt Railway only uses Stadler Regio-Shuttle RS1 diesel multiple units on its lines .

In freight traffic, the route is of great importance for north-south traffic. The trains mostly run via the Werntalbahn and from there via Bamberg to Nuremberg. This bypasses the heavily used Würzburg – Fürth route.

Since a regional train only ran every two hours between Schweinfurt and Bamberg for a long time, there were no longer any intermediate stops between the two cities of Schweinfurt and Haßfurt. Now that there is an hourly connection again, a new stop was opened in Schonungen on December 14, 2014.

In June 2006 the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG) put the operation of local trains around Würzburg to tender across Europe. The routes also include the Würzburg – Bamberg regional train connection. The tender period is eleven years. On February 9, 2007, the decision was made to assign the traffic to DB Regio AG after 2010 as well. In addition to the introduction of a general hourly service to Schweinfurt on all weekdays, the trains ending in Schweinfurt are also to be continued to the city station and no longer turn at the main station as before. The required measures were implemented for the timetable change on December 12, 2010. In the two-hour guided regional express line from Nuremberg via Schweinfurt to Würzburg should the timetable change in 2011 to enter a change: With the announcement of the e-network francs by the Bavarian Railway Company was provided this line with new railcars of series 442 to make use. Due to the incomplete approval (train allocation not yet approved) and late delivery of these railcars, the previous concept is now offered. The RE connection Würzburg – Bamberg – Lichtenfels – Bayreuth / Hof was split in two. This happened because DB Regio Franken won the tender in the Main-Spessart area at the beginning of 2013. Since December 2013, it has consisted of the (Frankfurt–) Würzburg – Bamberg line, which was transferred to DB Regio Bayern VB Franconia, and the Bamberg – Lichtenfels – Bayreuth / Hof line, which was transferred to DB Regio Bayern VB Nordostbayern. From December 2015, the two-hour extension of the new Twindexx Vario trains coming from Frankfurt (new double-decker trains ) from Würzburg to Bamberg was implemented. Until then, multiple units of the 425 series were running in this area on the RE connection from December 2013. These are also used on the RB connection of the Mainfrankenbahn to optimize the Coradia Continental trains. The Bamberg – Bayreuth / Hof connection has been equipped with class 641 diesel multiple units in addition to the RegioSwinger since December 2013 .

Future development

As part of Deutsche Bahn's long-distance traffic offensive 2030 , this route is to be integrated into the intercity network with the newly introduced IC Bamberg – Stuttgart
