Railway stations in Bavaria |
The Bamberg station is the passenger station of the independent city of Bamberg in Upper Franconia . As a hub station , it is served by local trains operated by Deutsche Bahn and the Agilis railway company, as well as by ICE trains. The station is on the Nuremberg – Bamberg , Bamberg – Hof and Bamberg – Rottendorf railway lines . It has seven platform tracks and belongs to price class 2.
152 regional and 27 long-distance trains stop daily. In 2016, around 15,000 travelers were counted every day. That made it the busiest train station in Upper Franconia.
location
The station is in the east of the city, northeast of the right arm of the Regnitz . It is framed by Ludwigstrasse in the west, Starkenfeldstrasse in the south, which crosses the railway systems on a bridge, Brennerstrasse in the east and Zollnerstrasse with an underpass under the tracks in the north. An underpass from the Gleistunnel to Brennerstrasse, which merges into the new wheel house, was broken since 2010 and opened in March 2012. On the station forecourt, Luitpoldstrasse meets Ludwigstrasse from the city center. The station building at Ludwigstrasse 6 is to the west of the railway facilities.
Three double-track and electrified main lines meet at Bamberg station . The Nuremberg – Bamberg railway line ( VzG 5900) is part of the German Unity Transport Project No. 8 (VDE 8) and is used for long-distance , regional and freight transport . As a continuation, the Bamberg – Hof railway line (VzG 5100) begins in Bamberg , which in the section to Hochstadt - Marktzeuln is also an electrified mainline for long-distance and freight traffic. The railway line to Rottendorf near Würzburg (VzG 5102), which is used for regional and freight traffic, also begins in Bamberg . In addition, a single-track, non-electrified line to the port of Bamberg on the Main-Danube Canal (VzG 5101) begins in the station , on which only freight traffic takes place. This route is operated by the bayernhafen group . Until 2001, Bamberg was the starting point for a single-track, non-electrified branch line to Scheßlitz (VzG 5114), which from 1985 was only used for freight traffic.
history
The station was opened in 1844 as the terminus of the Nuremberg – Bamberg railway line by the Royal Bavarian State Railways . The first train pulled into the station on August 25, 1844, but operations did not officially begin until October of the same year. Shortly after its opening, in April 1845, the station became the seat of the Royal Bavarian Railway Office in Bamberg . In 1846 the railway line was extended north towards Hof . The construction work on the station building was still ongoing at this point; it was opened in September 1846. The building was designed by the architect Georg Friedrich Christian Bürklein , who became known for planning several train station buildings in Bavaria.
In 1852 the Bamberg train station was connected to the Bamberg – Würzburg railway line and thus became a railway junction . The station building was enlarged and an additional floor was added. This renovation was finished in 1858. In 1866 the first signal box went into operation at Bamberg station.
From 1897 to 1922 the most important junction of the Bamberg tram was on the station forecourt . The stop there was served by three of the four lines in the network. After the tram was shut down, a replacement bus service did not begin until 1924 .
In 1908 the station was connected to the railway line to Scheßlitz and the Bamberg depot was established . Due to this increase in operational importance, the reception building was expanded again between 1900 and 1908 and received a porch.
In 1939, the Deutsche Reichsbahn electrified the station along with the lines to Hof and Nuremberg, as it was a stop on the important long-distance connection between Berlin and Munich. However, due to the damage that the station sustained during World War II , its importance for long-distance traffic decreased again in the following years. Although the reconstruction was quick, long-distance traffic at Bamberg train station continued to decline, as the contact wires were dismantled again in the Soviet occupation zone in 1946.
In 1948 the mechanical signal box was replaced by an electromechanical signal box .
outlook
With the commissioning of the new Ebensfeld – Erfurt line , an hourly ICE system stop in both directions has been offered in Bamberg since December 2017. Due to construction sites, there are still some gaps in the 2018 annual timetable. The hourly service should be established from the 2019 annual timetable. In addition, since December 2017, an IC on the Leipzig – Karlsruhe line has stopped once a day.
The start of the expansion in Bamberg is planned for 2022 (status: 2017).
On February 18, 2017, the CSU, as the largest city council group, spoke out in favor of expanding the portfolio. At the beginning of March 2018, the city council voted to extend the existing line at ground level. The two outer tracks should be designed for 230 km / h, the two inner ones for 160 km / h. The connection of the line to Schweinfurt is to be created for 100 km / h. The construction financing agreement for the main construction project is scheduled for 2022. The first preparatory measures are planned from 2021. Construction of the main construction project is scheduled to start in 2023. The main construction project should be completed in 2030. The total value of the measure in the Bamberg node is around 1 billion euros.
Deutsche Bahn plans to set up an IC line from Bamberg via Würzburg and Stuttgart to Tübingen by December 2028 at the latest.
Infrastructure
The station has seven through tracks on four platforms, with track 1 on the main platform. The seventh track bears the number 8. Each platform is covered and has digital train destination displays. All platforms are connected to the main platform via a pedestrian underpass. The station is also equipped with elevators for disabled people.
Reception building
The three-storey historic reception building made of sandstone with three wings has a slightly raised central projection , which is adjoined by a two-storey porch, as well as a flat hipped roof covered with tiles . The roof of the porch is made of metal. Originally the station was equipped with a princely room, which has not been preserved. To the north of the station building there are three side buildings under monument protection . In the station building there is a travel center and shopping facilities as well as a gastronomic offer.

Long-distance transport
Bamberg is served by ICE trains on line ICE 28 from Berlin via Leipzig to Munich every two hours and by individual trains on line 18 from Hamburg and Berlin via Halle (S) to Munich . Both lines now run via Erfurt instead of Saalfeld and Jena. There come ICE T and ICE 1 as a substitute used, which from 2019 by ICE 4 to be replaced. In addition, a wrong Inter City - pair of trains on the line IC 61 of Leipzig by Karlsruhe .
When the timetable changed on December 15, 2013, the number of daily ICE stops rose from 18 to 24.
With the timetable change in December 2019, the ICE offer is to be increased from up to 29 to 31 per day. This should create a largely hourly service to Berlin and Munich.
Due to the Stadler KISS car set taken over from the Westbahn on the new IC line between Dresden and Rostock, there is a nightly transfer from the plant in Vienna to the said route. Because of this journey, Bamberg train station has benefited from another intercity stop since March 2020.

The Bahnhof / Ludwigstr bus stop south of the reception building is served by nine city bus routes operated by the Bamberg public utility company. Most of it runs every 15 minutes on weekdays. The central bus station in the city center can therefore be reached by bus approximately every three to five minutes. In addition, the station / post office and station / atrium stops are in the immediate vicinity of the station and in front of the station forecourt building . Regional bus routes from other operators, several long-distance bus routes and the DB subsidiary Frankenbus (formerly OVF) also operate there . Taxis can be reached on the station forecourt in front of the reception building . For the opening of the through tunnel in March 2012, the Brennerstraße stop was renamed Bahnhof / Brennerstr .
