history

Eschenbach

The origin of the name is still clearly recognizable: the place by the stream where ash trees grow . An older, well-known name of the place is Eskinebach , which has been handed down from the year 1023. Like the neighboring town of Dippach , Eschenbach was part of the Gumbert donation in 741. The original main occupations of the Eschenbachers were agriculture and cattle breeding. For this purpose, a ferry was set up across the Main as early as 1549, which enabled the Eschenbachers to reach their fields on the other side of the river. The ferry also connected the surrounding villages with Eschenbach. The ferry was important until 1957, when it was finally abolished due to its low profitability and the newly built bridge in Eltmann took over its duties. In the middle of the 18th century rafting was added as a livelihood for the Eschenbacher; while the men took over this activity, the women tilled the local fields. The rafting was not stopped until the Main was dammed in the mid-1950s. On July 1, 1971, Eschenbach became a district of Eltmann.

It is known that one of the “main rebels ” of the Peasant War - a certain Adam Haylgott - came from Eschenbach and was executed in 1525 together with three parents.
