history

The settlement was mentioned in 740 as "Castellum Altimoin" (Castell on the upper Main). However, the place existed since 640 (immigration of the Franks into the upper Main area). In the course of the Gumbert donation , the place came to Burkhard, the first bishop of Würzburg (742/43 to 753), who set up an office of the Würzburg monastery in Eltmann . In 1335, Emperor Ludwig granted Eltmann town rights . (Accordingly, they celebrated “675 years of town elevation” in 2010.) After the secularization of the Hochstift Würzburg, which belonged to the Franconian Empire from 1500 , in 1803 in favor of Bavaria, it was left to Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany to form the Grand Duchy of Würzburg and fell in 1805 with this in 1814 finally to Bavaria . In 1819 a Bavarian regional court of the older order was established, which was converted into the Eltmann District Court in 1879. A major construction site was the Maindurchstich (today's course of the Main from the Main Bridge up the Main) by the Reich Labor Service in 1937. In 1944, ten children in the home were deported as part of the persecution of Sinti and Roma by the National Socialists . On July 1, 1959, the district court was repealed.

Incorporations

On July 1, 1971, the previously independent communities of Eschenbach, Lembach, Limbach and Weisbrunn were incorporated. On May 1st, 1978 Dippach am Main and Roßstadt were added.

Description of coat of arms

Eltmann coat of arms
Blazon : “Quartered in silver and red, covered with the standing figure of a man in armor in blue who holds a halberd in his right hand, the left on the handle of the sword; a T-shaped silver symbol at the top left. "

Coat of arms history

Eltmann was owned by the Counts of Gumbert in the 8th century. In the course of the Gumbert donation, the place came to Burkhard, the first bishop of Würzburg (742/43 to 753) for the Würzburg bishopric, which set up an office in Eltmann. The place remained with the bishopric until the secularization. Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian elevated Eltmann to town in 1335. The oldest known seal imprint from 1432 appears only in literature and is not documented. It probably comes from a seal from the 14th century. In the shield only the quartered flag of the Bishopric of Würzburg is to be confessed. A later seal, which is dated 1512, shows the crossing with the armor , which should stand as "Heltmann" speaking for the no longer understood place name. This term also appears in the legend of a later town seal. The place name means "near the old Main" and expresses the location of the place on an arm of the Main, or after relocation, the river bed. At the beginning of the 19th century the coat of arms was augmented by the letter "T", which was also interpreted as a rifle fork, but whose origin is unknown. The colors have been known since the 16th century. Silver and red, the colors of the Würzburg monastery, indicate its long reign in Eltmann. In 1655 the shield was quartered with silver and blue. The position of the armor changed in detail in the 19th century, the colors remained unchanged.
