August Engelbrecht (* 1807 in Eltmann ; † May 11, 1887 in Vienna ) was an Austrian builder and architect of German origin.

Life

August Engelbrecht came from Lower Franconia and was the son of a bricklayer. When and why he came to Vienna is not known. In any case, the visit to the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna between 1829 and 1833 is documented. In 1845 he received the master builder license, was accepted into the master builder guild and became a citizen of Vienna. A successful career as a builder and homeowner followed that made him wealthy. He built most of the buildings as the client and sold them after completion. Engelbrecht had been married since 1836 and had five children. He died of pulmonary edema at the age of 80 .

August Engelbrecht was stylistically a representative of early historicism . His buildings show a great variety of designs from simple suburban houses to representative rental houses in the city center, whereby as the "property owner" he always made sure that the apartments could be rented profitably.
