Through house
As Durchhaus is called an intended mostly for pedestrian traffic, overbuilt passage through a building or such a building itself. An old name for the passage was also Consistently .
In terms of urban planning , throughhouses are characterized by the fact that they allow direct routes without giving away built-up space. This means that one and the same parcel serves traffic and residential or commercial purposes at the same time, because through-houses are often designed as shopping arcades in inner cities .
Traffic function
The passage often connects two parallel streets, so that through-houses are attractive for pedestrian traffic because they save a detour around a city block.
Often a through-house only offers the way from the street to a shared inner courtyard of an entire block. Such passable porches are also considered gatehouses or vestibules. There are or were through houses with a narrow-gauge track to bring hand-pushed carts with goods from the street into the courtyards.
Through houses in different cities
Examples of through houses are the baroque Barthels Hof in Leipzig or the numerous through houses in Salzburg on both sides of Getreidegasse . In Vienna or Budapest , too, they are among the structural features of the inner city that are perceived as characteristic and contribute to the flair of these cities. There are also passages in Venice , where they are called Sotoportego .
Through houses in Vienna
There are around 700 through houses in Vienna, most of them within the belt. Even larger building complexes that take up most or all of their blocks (such as the Hofburg , the Schottenstift or the Old General Hospital ) often consist of several courtyards with passageways to adjacent streets. In addition, many residential buildings built in perimeter blocks (such as community buildings , but also e.g. the Amerlinghaus ) have several entrances to their courtyards.
In February 2018, the City of Vienna marked three through-houses as pedestrian routes for the first time:
- Praterstrasse 42 - Czerningasse 7 / 7A
- Gentzgasse 21 - Währinger Strasse 100
- Sünnhof: Landstrasser Hauptstrasse 28 - Ungargasse 13
Walking times for the passage and opening times are shown on a blue sign with a yellow arrow at the courtyard entrance.
Selected throughhouses
Below is a table of throughhouses in Vienna, only buildings built before the First World War were taken into account. Passages whose access is restricted (hotels, restaurants etc.) or can no longer be used are also not considered.
