The Heiligenkreuzerhof (rarely Heiligenkreuzer Hof ) is a court ensemble in the center of Vienna . It lies between Schönlaterngasse and Grashofgasse and is now surrounded by a complex of monastery courtyard, prelature, chapel and apartment building.

history

The Heiligenkreuzerhof is often referred to as the oldest apartment building in Vienna. He was in the 12./13. It was built in the 16th century and has belonged to the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz since then . The medieval cellar vaults date from this time. In 1587 stone carvings were carried out by Italian masters, the brothers Elias and Alexius Payos from the abbey quarries at Kaisersteinbruch .

However, a large part of the courtyard, the chapel and the prelate's court were demolished in the Baroque era and rebuilt between 1659 and 1676 by order of the abbots of the Heiligenkreuz monastery. The courtyard only got its current appearance after further renovations in 1769–1771, and the external facades also date from this period.

In the last few decades, various rooms in the Heiligenkreuzer Hof have been rented out as private apartments. Helmut Qualtinger lived in such an apartment from 1975–1986 ; his widow Vera Borek- Qualtinger and the Thomas-Sessler-Verlag had a memorial plaque for the artist put up in the courtyard.

Bernardi Chapel

The Bernhard Chapel is located next to the prelature directly on Schönlaterngasse. It was consecrated in 1679 by Bishop Felix Breuner and is best known for its high baroque furnishings . This comes from Martino Altomonte , who lived in the Heiligenkreuzerhof until his death, and from Giovanni Giuliani , Georg Raphael Donner's teacher . In the years 2001 to 2003 the chapel was extensively renovated for around 460,000 euros. Today it is often used for weddings.
