Giovanni Giuliani
Giovanni Giuliani (* 1664 in Venice ; † 1744 in Heiligenkreuz , Lower Austria) was an Italian-Austrian plasterer and sculptor .
Live and act
Giovanni Battista Pietro Giuliani was born on April 29, 1664 in Venice, the son of a baker. He learned his craft from various masters in Bologna, Venice, Tyrol and Munich, the most famous teacher certainly being Giuseppe Mazza .
From 1690 he lived and worked primarily in Austria, bringing Italian baroque sculpture to Vienna, which was artistically starved by the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna.
He first attracted attention through the furnishing of the city palace built by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach for Prince Eugene of Savoy and through his work on the garden palace in Roßau for Prince Johann Adam Andreas (now the Liechtenstein Museum ).
Financial problems prompted him to enter into a lifelong relationship as a familiare with the Heiligenkreuz Abbey on February 25, 1711 , in return for the assignment of his remaining funds, works and the waiver of future monetary claims for the works to be created for the monastery, the order provided one free operation of the sculptor's workshop. The most important employee and student of this workshop was Georg Raphael Donner .
Until his death on September 5, 1744, he largely redesigned the Heiligenkreuz Abbey and the Heiligenkreuzerhof in Vienna. His most remarkable works include the choir stalls in Heiligenkreuz and the Bernhard Chapel in the Heiligenkreuzerhof. But his traces can also be found in other churches in the vicinity of Heiligenkreuz, such as in Gaaden .
Giuliani died in Heiligenkreuz, where he found his final resting place in the collegiate church like Martino Altomonte .
