The Roman Catholic parish church of Gaaden is visible from afar to the west of the village on a hill in the municipality of Gaaden in the Mödling district in Lower Austria . The church consecrated to St. James - incorporated into the Heiligenkreuz Abbey - belongs to the Deanery Heiligenkreuz in the Vicariate Unter dem Wienerwald of the Archdiocese of Vienna . The church and the rectory including the portal are under monument protection .

history

A church was first mentioned in a document in 1130. Remains of a Romanesque hall church with a recessed choir square and a west tower have been excavated. Around the year 1300 the church was vaulted and in 1334 raised to a parish church . A fire is reported in the sources in 1576. The church was damaged during the Great Turkish War in 1683. The medieval castle church was extensively expanded around 1735/1740 under Abbot Robert Leeb von Heiligenkreuz by means of a double tower facade .

During a break-in in 2003, an angel sculpture by Giuliani was stolen. It reappeared in Vienna in the course of an estate liquidation in 2019 and could be returned.

architecture

The original castle-church ensemble with a residential tower preserved in the rectory north of the church is surrounded by a churchyard wall in the south and east.

The nave with side arched windows under a gable roof shows a painted facade structure with pilasters . The west facade has a central projectile and a slightly curved glare gable , which was crowned with a stone cross with a cartouche , the former gallery window was walled up. The statue of St. James the Elder by the hand of the sculptor Giovanni Giuliani , which was made at the beginning of the 18th century. The flanking towers of the west facade are set back somewhat in relation to the central projection. The towers have arched sound windows and onion helmets . A small polygonal porch was introduced to the west facade . The slightly retracted Romanesque choir is covered by sacristy extensions in the north and south. During a restoration in 1991, a sgraffito ashlar and parts of a window frame from the time of the restoration in 1579 after the fire of 1576 were exposed. The chancel has stepped supporting pillars in the north and baroque round and oval windows in the east .

The interior of the church was opened in the nave - originally a Romanesque hall - with wide flat arches to create additional rooms similar to aisles and thus expanded into a square, high central room. The stained glass in the nave depicts Saints John the Baptist , Joseph , Leopold and Anna with Mary . These were probably made by Rudolf Geyling in 1897. The oculus shows a halo in the choir. The window in the west wall shows St. Peter .

Furnishing

The late baroque design of the church interior with altars , sculptures , the pulpit including the east wall of the choir with windows and lighting was carried out by the sculptor Giovanni Giuliani after 1735. The organ, which is in a classicist case, was built in 1843 by Christoph Erler . One bell is inscribed and dated Ludolff Overlach 1689 .
