history
The place was mentioned for the first time in 1130 and was initially a daughter parish of Alland. In 1334 the place was raised to a parish, shortly afterwards (1376) the monastery Heiligenkreuz had the basic authority. Devastation followed by Hungarians in 1477 and by Turks in 1529/1683. The monastery had since lost ownership but acquired the village again in 1579 (the church had burned down in 1576). In 1735/40 extensive renovation and expansion of the parish buildings (including the rectory) took place under Abbot Robert Leeb with numerous works by Giovanni Giuliani . After the Josephine parish elevation, the rectory was reduced by one floor. The Mariazeller Madonna in the church reminds of the importance of the parish church as a station along the Via Sacra to the famous pilgrimage site.
In the 19th century, the place was popular during the "summer vacation". Many well-known artists spent the summer there, such as the poet Ferdinand Raimund , who wrote the spendthrift in Gaaden in 1833 . The “Kraxenweiberl” in the spendthrift is a symbol for a Gaaden type of person who has lived laboriously on lime and wood for centuries. Other artists, including painters (such as Ferdinand Waldmüller ) and musicians, found inspiration for their works in the holiday resort.
Around the middle of the 19th century, a profound change in social conditions began. With the construction of the Vienna Ringstrasse, lime and wood became sought-after materials and the place experienced an economic and social boom.
Around 1911 Karl Freiherr von Skoda built the Gaaden Hunting Lodge (also called Skoda Castle) in the municipality of Gaaden according to plans by the architect Emanuel von Seidl , today Siegenfelder Str. 13. After the expropriation by the Soviet troops in 1945, the Hunting lodge Gaaden converted into a holiday home. More than 1000 children spent their summer holidays there by 1955. Today the Gaaden hunting lodge is privately owned.
After the annexation of Austria in 1938, the place was incorporated into the city of Vienna as the 24th district. It was not until 1954 that the place became independent again and fell back to Lower Austria.
On July 26, 1944, two American Boeing B-17s collided after an attack by German fighters in the airspace over Gaaden . Only three out of twenty crew members were able to save themselves by parachute.
A natural cave, which was only accessible by mining in a dolomite quarry, served the two companies Hofherr-Schrantz and Uher from Vienna as a production site on an area of around 5000 m² under the code name Dazit .

economy
At first, Gaaden was a purely agricultural and forestry place. Limestone quarries and lime kilns have also been operated for decades . A large dolomite quarry is located in the local area. There used to be a sawmill that used the water power of the Mödlingbach.
Today Gaaden is mainly a residential community with a few second home owners from Vienna . The only larger operation is the mineral dolomite quarry. Nevertheless, there are traces of craftsmanship, such as a locksmith's shop and a wood processing company.
