After graduating from high school, he was dressed in Heiligenkreuz on August 19, 1931, took the religious name Franz and was ordained a priest on July 11, 1937 . He studied forest science and graduated as a forest engineer in 1944. Until he was elected abbot, he mainly worked in the foundation building department and forestry operations. From September 15, 1969 to May 31, 1983 he was abbot of the Heiligenkreuz Abbey; 1969–1973 President of the Austrian Cistercian Congregation.

His motto Ligna silvarum coram domino ([should cheer] all the trees of the forest before the Lord) he took from Psalm 95 (96), it was a reference to his many years of activity in the forest enterprise. As abbot, he initiated a wide-ranging wave of restorations in the monastery that lasted throughout his term of office. He caused u. a. the construction of a new parish church, known today as the "Kreuzkirche", which was inaugurated in 1982. It is located above the Romanesque Karner in Heiligenkreuz.

1970

After his retirement he returned to Schloss Wasserberg. At his own request, he was not buried in the monks' cemetery north of the collegiate church, but in the north aisle of the collegiate church.
