Karl Braunstorfer (born May 3, 1895 in Katzelsdorf , Lower Austria , † September 20, 1978 in Heiligenkreuz , Lower Austria) was the 64th abbot of Heiligenkreuz Abbey .

Life

Heinrich Braunstorfer came from a farming family, entered the monastery of Heiligenkreuz on 22 August 1914 took the religious name of Karl and was on 24 February 1919 by Bishop Josef Pfluger for ordained priests . In the same year he was appointed novice master ; he held the office until 1939. From December 23, 1933 he was prior ; On August 9, 1945, the confreres elected him abbot, succeeding Gregor Pöck . In 1945, he was also abbot president of the Austrian Cistercian Congregation . On 10 August 1945 he received by Theodor Innitzer the benediction .

He dedicated his term of office in Heiligenkreuz to the reconstruction after the war and the deepening of monastic life: Gloriari in Cruce Domini Nostri Jesus Christ was his motto ("we boast in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ"). He participated as a council father at the Second Vatican Council , resigned as abbot on the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross (September 14th) in 1969 and devoted himself to the issue of a new (Latin) Cistercian district in accordance with the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council. He died on September 20, 1978. He is buried in the convent cemetery next to the monastery church of the monastery.

Braunstorfer is one of the defining figures in the history of the Heiligenkreuz Abbey and one of the most important Cistercians of the 20th century. In spring 2003 the Austrian Bishops' Conference decided to initiate a beatification procedure. On November 15th, 2008 Cardinal Schönborn opened the diocesan beatification process.
