Vera Borek

Vera Borek (born September 20, 1940 in Breslau ) is an Austrian actress .

Life

Borek comes from an artistic family. She was born in Breslau as the daughter of a German opera singer and a Viennese leather goods dealer. During their childhood, the family moved to Vienna in 1945 . She completed her acting training at the University of Music and Theater in Hanover . Borek had engagements as a theater actress at the Schauspielhaus Bochum , at the Städtische Bühnen Münster , at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden , at the Thalia-Theater in Hamburg (season 1969/70 as Konstanze in King Johann by William Shakespeare ), at the Schauspielhaus Wien , at the Theater im Kopf in Vienna and at the Wiener Festwochen .

From the 1976/77 season until her retirement in 2005 she was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Vienna Volkstheater . She later continued to appear there as a guest actress. Borek played all the classic roles in her field, which ranged from the youthful naive, the youthful heroine to the salon lady. At the Volkstheater she appeared as Jenny in Brecht / Weill's Die Dreigroschenoper (1990/91), as Olivia in Was ihr wollt (1992/93), as Ada in Horváth's Zur Schöne Aussicht (1994/95), as Hekuba in Die Troerinnen (1996/96), as Irene Harms in Der einsame Weg (1996/97), as Valerie in Tales from the Vienna Woods (1997/98), as Millerin in Kabale und Liebe (2002/03), as Marthe Rull in Der zerbrochne Krug (2002/03) as well as in pieces by Elfriede Jelinek , Gert Jonke , Thomas Bernhard and Franzobel . 2004 she starred in the world premiere of the mini-dramas Penetrating questions from Antonio Fian . In the 2007/2008 season she embodied Claire Zachanassian in Friedrich Dürrenmatt's tragic comedy The Visit of the Old Lady at the Volkstheater . In the 2009/10 season she took on the role of mother in the German-language premiere of the stage version of Pedro Almodóvar's film Everything about my mother .

In 2007, Borek played for the first time at the Theater in der Josefstadt , in Dolores Schmidinger's stage version of Elizabeth T. Spira's everyday stories .

Borek has also appeared in some feature films and television roles since the late 1960s . She often took on roles in television plays . In 1978, she played the role of Nadya in the US miniseries Holocaust - The Story of the White Family . In 1979 Maximilian Schell cast her in his Horvath film Tales from the Vienna Woods as the Madame who orders or wants to order tin soldiers in the shop of the magician king . In 2000, directed by Xaver Schwarzenberger , she drew an amiable character portrait as Cilli in the comedy film Vino Santo - Long live love, long live wine .

Borek also worked as a reciter . In 1976 she went on a reading tour with Helmut Qualtinger , during which she presented the two texts by Johann Nestroy , Ödön von Horváth and Karl Kraus as well as Qualtinger's own literary works.

Several times she gave readings from the autobiography Weiter Leben. A youth of Ruth Klüger , including in the Jewish Museum in Vienna and in the Old Town Hall in Linz . In 2009, in memory of the Reichspogromnacht , she appeared at the Theater im Nestroyhof together with Erni Mangold in a staged reading of the experimental prose text spielraum by Elfriede Gerstl .

Borek also worked as a speaker for radio plays and audio books ; often joint works with Qualtinger emerged. In September 1976 the joint radio play recording of the Qualtinger text Reigen Express was produced. In addition to the Reigen Express , two more dialogues with Qualtinger / Borek were played: Vienna is becoming a cosmopolitan city again and a posh location . Borek and Qualtinger also recorded texts by Ödön von Horváth together. Under the title I have 174 letters and cards from Robert Walser , Borek read an audio book version from the memories of the laundress and Walser friend Frieda Mermet as well as texts by Robert Walser . She also recorded Effis Nacht by Rolf Hochhuth as an audio book. She was named Best Actress at the 2017 ORF Radio Play Awards.

From 1982 until his death in 1986, Borek was married to Helmut Qualtinger .
