The old town hall is one of the sights of the Upper Austrian capital Linz . It is located on the east side of the main square and gave the district to the east of the square the name Rathausviertel . Like many of the buildings in Linz's town hall district and old town district, the building has an arcade courtyard .

history

The building in its current form was planned by Master Christoph after the city fire of 1509. The characteristic octagonal town hall tower and some vaulted rooms inside the town hall have been preserved from this building. In 1658/1659 the building was expanded and received the current baroque facade .

During the annexation of Austria to National Socialist Germany , Adolf Hitler , who was greeted with jubilation by the population in the city of his youth , announced the completion of the so-called Anschluss in his first speech as German Chancellor on Austrian soil.

Todays use

Today the old town hall is the seat of the mayor and the municipal council . From 1993 to 1997 the building was carefully restored. This also were Gothic crafts and a Biedermeier Painting from 1820 discovered. The Tourist Information and the Linz Museum for the History of Dentistry are also located in the Old Town Hall.
