The comedy To the beautiful view is one of the first plays by Ödön von Horváth (1901–1938). It was written in 1926, but only premiered in Graz in 1969. According to a statement by Horváth's brother Lajos, the model for the Pension zur Schönen Aussicht was a windy pension in Murnau and the characters had real role models.

action

The play takes place in a rundown hotel that is on the verge of bankruptcy. Several people with dubious pasts have stayed here as staff, but apart from one permanent guest there have long been no paying hotel guests.

In this situation, Christine appears, who was the lover of the hotel manager Strasser the previous summer and had a child from him and asked him for help and support in many letters. The hotel manager, the guests and the staff treat her with contempt and abuse her as a whore. Together they devise a plan to free Strasser from his maintenance obligations, with all the men claiming that they too had slept with Christine last summer. When she told the hotel company towards the end of the play that she had made money in the meantime, she was courted by the men present. But she decides to leave the hotel again and to do it alone.
