Jan Delay
Jan Delay (* 20th February 1976 in Hamburg-Eppendorf ; bourgeois: Jan Philipp Eißfeldt ) is a German hip-hop - Reggae - Soul -, rock - and radio - musicians . He is a member of the Beginner group and is also active as a solo artist.
biography
Jan Delay attended the Helene-Lange-Gymnasium in Hamburg from 1986 to 1995 , passed the Abitur there and got to know his later bandmates, the “Beginner”, around the school. As musical influences in his youth he named Prince , the Blues Brothers , Nina Hagen / Spliff , Madonna , Rio Reiser and especially Udo Lindenberg from the record collection of his parents ("He sang in German and with great beats and beautiful harmonies"), According to the FAZ, he is connected by the "distinctive nasalism [as well as] a natural nonchalance and a thoroughly pleasant coolness".
Jan Delay is a third of the hip-hop combo Beginner (formerly Absolute Beginner), in which he usually appears under the pseudonym Eizi Eiz or Eißfeldt, while he uses the pseudonym Jan Delay mainly as a solo artist and in the genres of reggae and funk . With drip he forms the formation La Boom . The pseudonym Jan Delay is on the one hand an allusion to the rapper Young Deenay , who was briefly successful in the 90s . On the other hand, delay means delay in English and is also the name of a key effect in reggae / dancehall music (with reverberation an important style element in reggae and especially in dub ). Another name of the hamburger, which he used on various underground publications (the Eimsbush-Style League), is Boba Ffett (based on Boba Fett , a character from Star Wars ).
In 1997 he founded the Eimsbush label together with some musician colleagues , which in 2003 had to file for bankruptcy.
His solo album Searching for the Jan Soul Rebels , which he recorded together with the Sam Ragga Band and was released in 2001, was highly praised by the critics, he skillfully mixed different styles of music in it, sometimes innovatively. The title alludes to the debut album Searching for the Young Soul Rebels of Dexy's Midnight Runners on. This album was produced in close cooperation with producer Matthias Arfmann , who among other things also produced the first album by reggae artist Patrice and the first two albums by the beginners. In the same year he took on the single audition date alongside Sleepwalker as part of the "Hamburg City Allstars" . This placed itself in the German single charts for nine weeks and reached its highest chart listing with rank 44.
In August 2006 he released his second solo album entitled Mercedes-Dance , which was produced in collaboration with his new band Disko No. 1 and with Matthias Arfmann & Tropf as co-producers. This is in stark contrast to his debut album, in the intro Jan Delay already says: “Reggae is dead, now it's funk”. The record is dominated by jazz tones with strong funk elements. It reached number one in the German charts in the first week . Some of the lyrics are no longer as socially / politically critical as his earlier works, which he also addresses in the intro . A live album and a DVD by Mercedes-Dance were also released. The single Klar was previously released.
When performing live, he works with the radio band Disko No. 1 together. With the song Feuer Jan Delay took part in the 3rd Bundesvision Song Contest for the federal state of Hamburg on February 9, 2007 and achieved second place. On July 7th, 2007 he performed on Live Earth in Hamburg . Delay speaks the German dubbing voice of Japeth the goat in the film The Little Red Riding Hood Conspiracy and of Vector in the film Despicable Me .
In 2009 he worked with the radio station 1 Live and gave a concert for the winner of the station's own school duel in front of around 1,500 students, high school graduates and teachers. After a collaboration with Udo Lindenberg on its comeback album Strong as Two Jan Delay August published in 2009 with We Children from Bahnhof Soul his third solo album, musically as its predecessor also strongly Funk and Soul inspired, his own words the attempt to To make the previous album "again in right and really good". Like its predecessor Mercedes Dance , Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Soul also reached first place in the German album charts.
The Hamburg film Soul Kitchen (2009) by Fatih Akin was extensively changed by the director after Delay told Akin after a preview that the film “did not have the right groove yet”. The preview should clarify whether Delay would give permission to use one of his songs. By his own admission, he meant the “dramaturgical hole” that, in his opinion, existed in the first version of the film.
In June 2010 Jan Delay's second live album was released, entitled Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Soul Live , which, analogous to Mercedes-Dance Live, contains live recordings of the tour for his album from the previous year. On May 14, 2011 Delay performed at the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Düsseldorf together with Disko No. 1 on.
In 2011 he could also be seen on Sesame Street at Ernie & Bert-Songs.
On April 11, 2014 Jan Delay released the rock- style album Hammer & Michel . Delay performed his song St. Pauli from his new album during the 2014 Echo Awards . The day after the performance, St. Pauli reached number ten in the German single charts . Love , another single from his album, entered the charts at number 59 that same week.
In 2016, Advanced Chemistry was released, a new album for beginners , which reached number 1 on the album charts.
On August 24, 2018, Delay released the stadium ballad Green-White Love for his favorite club, Werder Bremen . The song is part of the double album Lauter Werder , which was released in 2019. At the same time, the video filmed in the area around the Weser Stadium appeared, in which Thomas Schaaf, among others, has an appearance.
Confrontation with Heino
In an interview with the Austrian newspaper Die Presse in April 2014, Jan Delay described the pop singer Heino , who covered a song by the beginners in 2013 , as a “Nazi”.
“Everyone suddenly said: It's funny, it's Heino. No, that's a Nazi (...) "
Heino then filed a criminal complaint against Delay through his lawyer . After a payment of 20,000 euros (plus the legal fees incurred), the complaint was withdrawn. Heino said he did not keep the money but donated it to two workshops for the disabled in Bad Münstereifel and Bielefeld-Bethel .
Political statements
In his songs "Delay railed against the power of large corporations, [...] [and picks] up on German inhibitions". In 2004 he was also committed to a radio quota for German-language pop music. He expresses his sympathy for the black block at demonstrations, supported the protests at the G8 summit in Heiligendamm and sees property damage as a permissible means of agitation , since in his opinion it is not directed against people. Although Jan Delay classifies himself as politically left , he describes himself as not anti-capitalist .
Jan Delay is also committed as a reading ambassador for the Reading Foundation and for learning to read and write as part of the iCHANCE campaign , which is carried out by the Federal Association for Literacy and Basic Education . In 2012 he supported the Oxfam campaign You don't play with food! against food speculation. He is also a CSR ambassador for the football club Werder Bremen's Lifelong Tolerant campaign .
