The audition is a song by the German hip-hop producer and rapper Sleepwalker , which was created in collaboration with the Hamburg City Allstars. The piece is the first single from his debut album Sleepwalker invites you to ... the audition date .

Creation and artwork

The audition date was written by Sleepwalker himself - under his pseudonym "Golgo 13" - together with other co-authors. As co-authors who acted Deichkind -members Philipp Grütering , Bartosch Jeznach and Malte Pittner and Jan Philipp Eißfeldt ( Jan Delay ), Anthony Emrie Greer, Petzke, Felix Ragoß (Felix XL), Phillip Stern head, Nico Suave and Oliver Andre Zaworka. Sleepwalker in Hamburg's Boogie Park Studio acted as producer and sound engineer . The mixing took place under the direction of Robert Neubauer, also in the Boogie Park Studio.

On the front cover of the single you can see - in addition to artist names and song titles - a schedule with the participating artists. The organizer shows the date of April 30, 2000, the day of White Sunday . In the background of the section for the said date, the performers can be seen in black and white . The photograph of the artist comes from the former backspin - art director Mika Väisänen. The Hamburg photographer and rapper Stephan “Gizmo” Haramina was responsible for the artwork, the design comes from Skena.

Publication and promotion

The first release of the audition date took place on June 11, 2001 as a maxi single on CD and vinyl record by the music label Motor Music in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This included a remix by DJ Ill Will, instrumental versions of the original and the remix as well as the song Until the Last Breath by the Hamburg rapper Hanseknaller as the B-side . The vinyl record also includes an acapella mix for the audition date and an instrumental version of Until the Last Breath as the B-side. The piece was published by Arabella Musikverlag, Bushbeats Publishing, EMI Music Publishing , Future World Consulting Publishing, Hanseatic Musikverlag, Octopussy II Musikverlag and Tonofen Edition. It was distributed by Universal Music Publishing . Three weeks after its first release, the audition date appeared as part of Sleepwalker's debut album Sleepwalker asks for… the audition date on July 2, 2001. To promote the song, a commercial was shot, which was supported by the electronics retail chain Saturn among others .

The lyrics for the audition date are bilingual in German and English . The stanzas are in German, the refrain in English. The text was written by Deichkind members Philipp Grütering, Bartosch Jeznach and Malte Pittner as well as by Jan Delay, Anthony Greer, Petzke, Sleepwalker, Phillip Sternkopf, Nico Suave, Felix XL and Oliver Zaworka. The composition was specially composed by Sleepwalker. The composition itself is based on a sample from Jermaine Jackson's You Got to Hurry Girl . Musically, the song moves in the realm of German hip-hop . The content is in audition to job interviews for a job at the studio Sleepwalker.

The song is built on nine stanzas, a refrain and an intro . First the piece begins with the intro that emerges from the line “This is the audition date! Yes, you heard that right, this is the audition date, psst! " The intro is followed by the first three verses, which are rapped in sequence by Bartosch Jeznach, Nico Suave and Petzke. After the first three stanzas, the chorus sung by Tony (Anthony Emrie Greer) follows for the first time. The chorus is followed by the next three verses, which are rapped in sequence by Malte Pittner, Oliver Zaworka and Felix XL. The chorus follows before the last three verses by Phillip Sternkopf, Philipp Grütering and Jan Delay are rapped as Eißfeldt. Music video

The music video for the audition shows the Hamburg City Allstars how each of them individually conducts an interview with Sleepwalker. The performers and sleepwalkers are shown realistically, while the background is animated. Tony is the only one who doesn't show up for the interview, he slips into the role of a cleaner . The total length of the video is 4:31 minutes. The video was made under the direction of Alexander Eckert. To date, the music video has over 1.1 million views on YouTube (as of July 2020).

The audition date reached position 44 in the single charts in Germany . Entry to the chart was not permitted in Austria and Switzerland.

Sleepwalker's audition was the only time in his career that he reached the German single charts as an interpreter. As a producer, after What Time Is It? (Zeitgeist 2.0.0.0) ( Harleckinz ) the charts for the second time, as an author for the first time. For Delay this is the eighth chart success in his writing and the sixth as a solo artist. Deichkind reached Bon Voyage , Come on and Far Away! for the fourth time the German single charts as authors and performers. For Suave, the audition date after Vergesslich is the second chart success in Germany as an author and performer. Greer, Petzke, Sternkopf, Felix XL and Zaworka reached the German single charts for the first and only time in their respective functions.
