The Reading Foundation is a German foundation from Mainz that was founded in 1988 to promote reading pleasure and literacy .

Goals and purpose

The Reading Foundation promotes reading skills and access to reading for all ages and population groups in all media. As an operational and nationwide active foundation, it carries out research and model projects as well as broad-based programs in close cooperation with partners - federal and state ministries, scientific institutions, foundations, associations and companies. It assumes that all reading and listening media are equivalent. In a multimedia world, books , magazines , newspapers , the Internet , films and audio media are linked and refer to each other.

The Reading Foundation is under the patronage of the respective Federal President and is largely financed by donations from the Foundation Council members and donors as well as public funds that flow into the project and program work.

Programs and projects

In addition to research and model projects for the federal and state governments, the focus of the Reading Foundation's work is on broad-based projects. The programs and projects are aimed at a wide variety of target groups and ages such as families, daycare centers, schools and extracurricular reading promotion . The major initiatives and programs of the Reading Foundation include the Nationwide Reading Day, World Book Day and the nationwide early childhood reading promotion program “Lesestart 1-2-3”.

Nationwide reading day

The nationwide reading day has been held every November since 2004. It is a joint initiative of Die Zeit , the Reading Foundation and the Deutsche Bahn Foundation. Everyone who enjoys reading will read to others on this day, for example in schools, kindergartens, libraries or bookstores. In 2019, around 700,000 readers took part in the nationwide reading day, including numerous politicians and celebrities.

World Book Day

The Reading Foundation accompanies the UNESCO - World Book Day on April 23 with numerous events and actions. The focus of the World Day campaign is on the “I'll give you a story” initiative by the Reading Foundation, the German Book Trade Association , cbj Children's Books Publishing , Deutsche Post AG and ZDF .

The gift book for World Book Day from the series “I'll give you a story” appears with an annual circulation of 1.2 million copies. It is the largest first edition of a book for children and young people in Germany. In 2019, over 1 million children in grades 4 and 5 received the World Day book free of charge in participating bookshops through a book voucher campaign. The aim of the initiative is to inspire children to read with stories that reflect their interests and thus strengthen their reading skills.

Reading start 1-2-3

"Lesestart 1-2-3" is a nationwide early childhood reading promotion program financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and implemented by the Reading Foundation since the end of 2019. As part of the program, parents receive three sets of reading starters with everyday tips on reading aloud and a book gift for their children when they are one, two and three years old. Lesestart is also accompanied by numerous local campaigns and events.

The parents receive the first two sets during the U preventive medical examinations in pediatric practices, the third is given out by participating libraries. The program is the successor to “Reading Start - Three Milestones for Reading”. It was carried out by the Reading Foundation from 2011 to mid-2019. During this period, around 4.5 million reading start sets were given to parents and their children.
