Thomas Bellut (born March 8, 1955 in Osnabrück ) is a German publicist and journalist . Since March 2012 he has been the director of the Second German Television .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1974 at the Antonianum grammar school in Vechta , Bellut studied political science , history and journalism from 1975 to 1982 at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . He completed his studies with a doctorate . He was a scholarship holder of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation . Before Bellut went to the television station ZDF , he worked for the daily newspaper Westfälische Nachrichten in Münster from 1983 to 1984 .

First he was editor of the Länderspiegel and for the ZDF correspondent in Berlin and in 1988 he became an advisor to program director Oswald Ring , responsible for programs such as Familienmagazin and Reiselust , which he took over in 1990. In 1992 he became editor-in-chief for special programs and the magazine blickpunkt . From 1997 he headed the main editorial office for domestic politics and moderated ZDF special and election programs, the Politbarometer , ZDF special and What now ...? .

From 2002 to 2012 Bellut was the program director of ZDF. In addition to numerous reforms, he brought in the heute-show and made the genre “ infotainment ” popular on German television.

On June 17, 2011 he was elected to succeed the ZDF director Markus Schächter . Bellut took office on 14./15. March 2012. Norbert Himmler became the new program director . On the eve of the broadcast on March 25, 2012, he informed Peter Sloterdijk and Rüdiger Safranski about the end of their program The Philosophical Quartet .

Bellut announced drastic changes as well as consistent savings in the ZDF program. Years of successful series such as Forsthaus Falkenau and Der Landarzt were sold under his leadership . Bellut signed Markus Lanz as the new host of the Saturday evening show Wetten, dass ..? . On September 18, 2015, he was re-elected for a second term from March 2017. Together with ARD , an online channel for young viewers was designed under Bellut, which started on October 1, 2016 under the name funk .

Bellut has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of Deutschlandradio since August 20, 2014 .

In connection with the voting scandal at ZDF in 2014 on the TV show Our Best , it became known that a voting result of the band Böhse Onkelz from 1st to 25th place had been manipulated secretly and with the knowledge of the then program director Bellut.

Private

Bellut is married to the former German-Turkish presenter of the daily ZDF magazine Today in Europe , Hülya Özkan , and has two children with her.
