ZDF special is a news program on German television on ZDF , which has been broadcast on important events since 1988 and supplements the coverage of current news programs. Depending on the occasion, this program will be broadcast after the 7 p.m. edition of today’s program and will usually last 15 minutes.

In the event of extraordinary events, such as the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the USA, this broadcast can last for several hours during the day. This was also the reason that the corresponding backdrops for ZDF special are always in an operational studio (where hello germany or WISO and the current sports studio are usually filmed) so that they can go on the air even faster. In the case of political events in particular, the ZDF special is also broadcast from the ZDF capital city studio or, in the case of major events, as direct reporting on site. In the event of long-lasting events such as the floods in Central Europe in 2013 or the COVID-19 pandemic , there was sometimes a ZDF special every day .

In addition to the normal contributions, ZDF special also offers sufficient background information as well as interviews with experts, connections to correspondents on site and live broadcasts with commentary. The moderators are usually on duty alternately and work with modern technical possibilities for fast and reliable information.
