Stefan Raue (2017)

After graduating from the Wilhelm-Dörpfeld-Gymnasium in Wuppertal, Raue completed a humanities degree and an internship .

From 1987 to 1990 he worked for WDR as a reporter. He then worked as a political editor and head of service at Rias TV in Berlin. From 1992 he headed the current and news departments at Deutsche Welle TV . He then worked at ZDF in various journalistic interfaces, most recently as deputy head of the main editorial department for foreign, domestic, social and educational policy. Since 1997 he has also been the editor-in-chief of the ZDF magazine blickpunkt , which broadcast reports and reports from East Germany. In early 2011, Udo Reiter , then director of the MDR, appointed him the first trimedial editor-in-chief of the state broadcaster . As the person responsible for the tri- media news desk , he coordinated the reporting on television, radio and new media.

At a technical discussion of the Committee for Culture and Media of the German Bundestag in January 2016, which dealt with violence against journalists by right-wing populist and right-wing extremist demonstrators, Raue appealed that the press should not accept the “declaration of war” and continue to report with journalistic distance will. Since the “civil war rhetoric” of the right-wing populist actors would incite violence against journalists and the emergence of Pegida led to a measurable increase in violence against journalists, the MDR would only send experienced journalists to such events on a voluntary basis and with personal protection.

At the beginning of June 2017, the Radio Council of Deutschlandradios elected him as the new director. On September 1, 2017, he succeeded Willi Steul . The eight-member board of directors of the radio operator had proposed Raue unanimously, but in the radio council he then got the narrowest possible majority with 26 votes (election requires a 2/3 majority). There was criticism of the personnel, but also of the majority of the selection process. The dissent was publicly expressed by the head of the Baden-Württemberg State Chancellery in Stuttgart, Klaus-Peter Murawski . He said that Raue was nominated as director at the urging of North Rhine-Westphalia's media state secretary Marc Jan Eumann and Berlin's state chancellor Björn Böhning . Raue describes the development opportunities he sees for the station in profiling the program offerings, the further development of digital formats, which in terms of aesthetics and dramaturgy are supposed to correspond more to the usage habits of younger target groups as well, as well as the merging of the two current locations and the discussion about the future of And the structure of public broadcasting in Germany.

Raue is a member of the SPD.
