Bet that..? was a television show in German-speaking countries . The program was discontinued almost 34 years after it was first broadcast on February 14, 1981, with the 215th edition on December 13, 2014. It was considered the "largest television show in Europe".

concept

The concept of the show included (prominent) guests and several betting providers. A betting provider bet that he can do something special or bizarre, a guest - who was assigned to him as a betting sponsor - tipped the outcome of the bet, i.e. whether the betting provider's plan succeeded or not. In the event that the sponsor was wrong, he offered a bet in advance or this was imposed by the moderator.

In the first few years, all guests were allowed to cast their vote on every bet and thus collect points, so that a continuous, coherent game was played across the entire broadcast. The betting king was the betting provider whose sponsor was correct most often. From 1987, the audience determined the betting king via tele-dialogue , which shifted the focus to spectacular bets. The guests limited themselves to the bet they were godfather for, which meant that no overall game was played.

The character of the bets that the sponsors had to place in the event of a wrong tip changed over time. Initially, a criminal aspect was in the foreground - hours of fundraising were repeatedly carried out in public places - later, deposits were left in the hall during the broadcast in order not to overly take up the time of the partly international guests. In rare cases a bet was not made.

The program's inventor, Frank Elstner , stated that he developed the concept for the program in two hours on a sleepless night. In addition to the bets, it also included music and casual conversations with the guests.

history

1981–1987: Frank Elstner

In the first broadcasts of Wetten dass ..? 1000 selected television viewers were able to give a tip on the outcome of the bets by telephone. " TED " (Tele-Dialog) presented the betting result live on the broadcast within a few minutes (here on September 4, 1982).

On February 14, 1981, ZDF broadcast the first edition of the entertainment show produced as a Eurovision program in cooperation with ORF and the German-speaking SF . One of the highlights of the first broadcast was the bet put by the candidate Hans Oßner, who inflated a hot water bottle and made it burst. Elstner already exceeded the first broadcast by 43 minutes, which over time became a characteristic of the broadcast. However, he was able to finish the broadcast on February 18, 1984 twelve minutes ahead of schedule.

In Elstner's time, the programs with the highest ratings fall. For six years he hosted 39 issues of the show before passing the show on to Thomas Gottschalk on April 4, 1987.

1987–1992: Thomas Gottschalk

Thomas Gottschalk presented a total of 36 programs from September 1987 to May 1992. In the early days, there was criticism in journalism of his more cheeky style of moderation than Frank Elstner and the content of the program. This led to the concept of Wetten, dass ..? adapted more to Gottschalk and approached the concept of Na sowas! on, the show previously moderated by him. On May 2, 1992 Thomas Gottschalk appeared in his first last Wetten, dass ..? Broadcast as a moderator. Then Gottschalk switched to the private broadcaster RTL .

1992–1993: Wolfgang Lippert

With Wolfgang Lippert , an East German entertainer and television presenter followed in Thomas Gottschalk's footsteps. He had his first broadcast on September 26, 1992 in Bremerhaven. Lippert hosted a total of nine issues of Wetten, dass ..? 12 to 15 million viewers tuned in under his moderation.

When Thomas Gottschalk expressed his interest in betting that ..? to return, the ZDF relied on Gottschalk again. Wolfgang Lippert had his last broadcast with a total of 16 million viewers on November 27, 1993 in Rostock.

1994–2011: Thomas Gottschalk

From January 15, 1994 Thomas Gottschalk again took over the moderation of the show.

On March 30, 1996, the 100th edition of the program was broadcast, to which Elstner and Lippert were invited as sponsors. The boy band Take That had their last appearance in Germany before the breakup. Gottschalk set the record on December 7th, 1996 in Hanover by exceeding 73 minutes. From October 1998 the comedian Olli Dittrich presented the outdoor bet.

In March 2001, the 20-year-old Wetten, dass ..? -Jubilee celebrated with an almost five-hour broadcast from Dornbirn , Austria , in which, in addition to Gottschalk, Elstner was also involved as co-moderator and Lippert as moderator of the outdoor bet. With the start of the new season, the outside bets were presented by Anastasia Zampounidis for two years . From 2003, there were no longer any moderators for this and the candidates introduced themselves.

On March 27, 2004, Thomas Gottschalk hosted his 100th program. In the final moderation of the program for the 25th anniversary on April 1, 2006 in Halle an der Saale, he announced his resignation that same evening as an April Fool's joke .

From October 2009 Gottschalk hosted the program together with the Swiss Michelle Hunziker , who was at his side as co-host and was responsible for the presentation of the bets.

In the broadcast on December 4, 2010, the 23-year-old acting student Samuel Koch tried to jump on stilts with a somersault over a car driven by his father. He fell and was seriously injured, whereupon the broadcast was canceled for the first time in its then 29-year history. Koch has been paralyzed since the incident. A scientific report acquitted the ZDF of complicity in the accident. An internal ZDF investigation also saw no culpable behavior on the part of the station.

In the following broadcast in February 2011, Gottschalk announced his resignation as a host of Wetten, dass ..? because since the candidate's accident there has been "a shadow on the program"; he could not "find his way back to the good mood that you rightly expect from me". In the summer edition on Mallorca, Elstner took over the moderation of a bet instead of Gottschalk at the end of the show, Gottschalk acted as a sponsor.

Gottschalk moderated the format for a total of 22 years before moving on to bet that ..? was looked back, finally resigned on December 3, 2011 in Friedrichshafen . Olli Dittrich was seen again in his role as an outside reporter on two of the programs. Thomas Gottschalk conducted 151 editions of the show. Michelle Hunziker also finished her work with him. At the end of April 2012, Swiss television announced that it would no longer participate in the production of the program and would remove it from its program.

2012–2014: Markus Lanz

Bet redemption by Michael Bublé on March 23, 2013
Bet that..? on March 23, 2013

The search for a successor for Thomas Gottschalk took almost a year. After Hape Kerkeling and Jörg Pilawa had canceled the preferred candidates, Markus Lanz was finally announced as the new moderator on March 11, 2012 .

On October 6, 2012, Lanz presented the show for the first time. Cindy from Marzahn started working as an assistant in October 2012, and a fixed contract was confirmed in January 2013. After the Mallorca edition, however, she dropped out of the show in June. She justified the exit with other scheduled show commitments. On September 22, 2013, ZDF announced that Markus Lanz would lead through the show without an assistant.

Markus Lanz moderated a total of 16 issues of the program from October 2012 to December 2014.

The end of betting that ..?

At the end of the 212th edition of Wetten, dass ..? on April 5, 2014, Markus Lanz announced that the ZDF format would be discontinued at the end of 2014 after three further editions.

The inventor and first moderator of Wetten dass ..? Frank Elstner said at the end of the program: “I see the decision with one laughing and one crying eye. Indeed, it is always sad when something ends. You see me laughing because I'm in a revival of Wetten, dass ..? faith."

The last broadcast of Wetten, dass ..? took place on December 13, 2014 in Nuremberg . Despite the withdrawal in 2012, Swiss television was also involved in this edition. Guests were Jan Josef Liefers , Til Schweiger , Otto Waalkes , Ben Stiller , Die Fantastischen Vier , who opened the show with their song Und los , Michael Herbig , Hermann Maier , Helene Fischer , Wotan Wilke Möhring , Katarina Witt , Elton , Olli Dittrich and the former candidate Samuel Koch . The presenter Markus Lanz overshadowed the broadcast, which contained five bets, by around 65 minutes. Bet that..? ended at about 11:50 pm with the song Time to Go by Unheilig . Before that, Lanz had said goodbye with the words "Life goes on - bet that?"

New edition 2020/2021

In March 2019, it was confirmed that Thomas Gottschalk 2020, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, will again host an edition similar to the program. In October 2019, Thomas Gottschalk announced that the (new) show would also be named Wetten, dass ...? will wear. A new website was also published on ZDF.de. The program should be broadcast from Offenburg on November 7, 2020.

In the first quarter, the ZDF announced that the planned special edition will be postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated lack of clarity about the relationships with the planned broadcast date.

Elements of the broadcast

Bet with the use of an excavator in the hall from the perspective of the hall audience (2014 in Graz)

Special bets

Hall and city bet

In the original concept of the hall bet, betting suggestions were received from the audience at the beginning of the evening broadcast. The moderator read them out and let the applause decide which bet to play. He himself was the godfather of the bet, which had to be redeemed by the end of the evening.

In Thomas Gottschalk's first Wetten, dass ..? Broadcast 1987 there was no room bet. However, as Gottschalk stated, due to audience protests, it was reintroduced in the next broadcast.

Wolfgang Lippert's bet in the hall bet was always jumping into a paddling pool-sized tub that was always filled differently. For example, it could be that Lippert had to bathe in mud at the end of a program. As Thomas Gottschalk to bet that ..? returned, he also jumped into a tub at the end of the first edition and announced that he had taken over this practice as a "legacy". However, it remained with this single jump, afterwards this form of betting was not continued by the moderator.

In October 2001, the hall bet was replaced by the city bet, in which Gottschalk bet against the citizens of the host city. In terms of content, the city bets were very similar to the hall bets. As city sponsors, celebrities who were born in the respective city or have a good connection to this city represented the citizens.

In October 2008, the hall bet was reintroduced with a slightly different concept. The audience no longer had a choice between different bets, instead the bet was given and ran against the respective city. As before, it had to be resolved at the end of the program in the hall. The reasons for the abolition of the city bet were varied: ZDF explained that one had the feeling that “the viewer did not get that much out of it”. Gottschalk justified the step by stating that they also “came to the end of our creativity”. In addition, the betting candidates threatened to drown in the hustle and bustle of the marketplaces, as many just wanted to party there. Over the years, falling odds and the organizational effort ultimately tipped the scales in favor of stopping city betting.

With the engagement of Michelle Hunziker as co-moderator, the hall bet was changed again. Hunziker now bet against Gottschalk that he will not find anyone who can do a certain action better than their own candidate. At the end of the show, either Gottschalk or Hunziker had to redeem a bet. Gottschalk's candidates were searched for a week before the show. A prominent citizen of the city was no longer employed.

In the 193rd edition on February 12, 2011 from Halle (Saale) there was a one-time city bet. From October 2012 city bets were regularly played again.

Lanz Challenge

Another version of the hall bet was the so-called “Lanz Challenge”, which was introduced with the first broadcast by Markus Lanz. A candidate from the audience competed against Markus Lanz in a physically demanding competition. If the candidate won, they received a trip for free.

The Lanz Challenge was abolished again in the 2013/2014 show season.

Child bet

In October 2001 a special children's bet was introduced per broadcast. This came from the show Kinder Wetten dass ..? emerged. The children's bet was not included in the voting for the betting king, since in most cases those bets in which children were involved had previously won. Instead, the candidates for the children's bet received a special prize. The children's bet remained an integral part of the program until the last issue.

Sponsors

In 1989,
Hannelore Kohl drove children from the Hollenberg Children's Village to the Christmas market in Bonn because of a bet redemption

National and international celebrities were invited as sponsors, mostly with reference to current media events. The most frequent guests were:

(without the children's expenses of Wetten, dass ..? )

After the success of his first broadcasts, Elstner wanted to invite the then Pope John Paul II to sponsor a thematically appropriate bet . This was not ready for a visit, but wanted to be connected via live broadcast. Elstner declined, however, fearing that other guests would follow suit.

Some stars stood out for their airs.

On October 31, 1987, the actress Brigitte Nielsen and the singer Cher appeared in an almost identical outfit, which gave a glimpse of a lot of bare skin. On another visit, Cher was not allowed to go on stage until the costume was "defused" with two small scarves in the hip region.

Mickey Rourke appeared as a sponsor in March 1990 and was the only guest who smoked unabashedly on the sofa; According to Frank Elstner, he should also have had "sweaty feet". In addition, after the broadcast there was a public discussion about the fact that the interpreter had significantly weakened the guest's crude language.

In October 1998, an annoyed Götz George made it clear that the film Solo for Clarinet - which he should have been promoting - did not really fit into such an entertainment show and that he would rather talk about it than have another conversation. The matter played itself up until George was booed loudly by the audience. When he was a guest again on November 8, 2003 and got into quarrel with Gottschalk again, the argument was revealed as staged after a few minutes.

Britney Spears should have signed something for her lost bet in March 2002, but refused to bet. Even Paris Hilton made in May 2005 with airs and graces attracted attention: She appeared without comment seven minutes from the end of the program and messes up the process.

Artists

Several nationally and internationally well-known performers performed per broadcast. The list of the most frequent appearances is given by the following artists:

(without the children's expenses of Wetten, dass ..? )

Scandals occurred a few times during the music appearances on the show.

On January 26th, 2002 Sarah Connor presented her new song From Sarah with Love as the first show act . For this appearance, she chose a dress by the Bremen fashion designer Sigrid Schumacher , which appeared transparent in the spotlight. To this day it is unclear whether Sarah Connor wore skin-colored underpants or not. The outrage over these "naked facts", described by the picture , made waves in the tabloids for several days. The ZDF was even assumed to have deliberately faded in a treadmill at the level of Connor's thigh to prevent deeper insights.

The Russian duo tATu caused a commotion when they started kissing during the performance on March 22, 2003 for their hit All the Things She Said . Gottschalk warned the audience during their appearance with the words: “If the two start kissing, don't think about it. It could be sisters. ” During the performance, the ZDF showed a tracking shot in the hall in the seconds of the kiss and only faded in the duo when they continued to sing.

Special stakes

The relief campaign Menschen für Menschen , who is active in Ethiopia, was the result of a bet. In the third broadcast from Vienna on May 16, 1981, Karlheinz Böhm bet that not even every third viewer would donate a mark for the Sahel zone . Böhm was right, but a total of 1.2 million marks came together.

This action was taken up in a similar form in the broadcast of June 8, 2013 from Palma de Mallorca. Markus Lanz bet that the viewers would not donate 500,000 euros for the flood victims in Central Europe by the end of the program . He lost the bet and totaled 552,882 euros.

In the entertainment area, too, a bet that was offered led to a new format: In 2003, Stefan Raab promised to go down a bobsleigh run with a wok if the bet was lost . Although he won this bet, he still kept his promise. This is how the Wok World Cup, which took place every year until Raab withdrew from TV, arose from this idea .

For guest Dieter Thomas Heck , in 1983, due to the inner-German border, it was not possible to cycle from his place of residence in Saarland to the radio exhibition in Berlin . Transit travel was only permitted on the train or on the motorway. He made do with an exercise bike in the coach.

Venues

The program was broadcast live six to seven times a year from different cities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. After the SRF withdrew in 2012, no more programs were broadcast from Switzerland.

During the summer breaks, special editions from the Xanten amphitheater (1991), the bullring in Palma (1999, 2007, 2009–2011, 2013), Disneyland Paris (2002), the Berlin Waldbühne (2004) and the theater in Aspendos, Turkey ( 2005).

The following locations hosted at least five editions:

(without the children's expenses of Wetten, dass ..? )

Production team

At a Wetten, dass ..? About 300 employees worked on the broadcast. The program was produced independently by ZDF until 2011 , partly together with ORF and Swiss television. From 2012 Markus Lanz ' company MHoch2 TV contributed to the editorial work.

Director

Producers

To the producers of Wetten, dass ..? included, among others, Wolfgang Penk (overall responsibility), Markus Heidemanns ( creative producer ), Markus Templin, Birgit Göller, Oliver Heidemann ( executive producer ), Viktor Worms , Manfred Teubner, Oliver Fuchs (overall management).

Adaptations

Children's expenses

From 1996 to 2000, on Christmas Day (in 2000, Christmas Day), ZDF carried the spin-off of Wetten, dass ..? for children. These were recordings that were made in the backdrop of the respective December broadcast. All the betting candidates were children (apart from the hall bet, which was not applicable in 2000), the sponsors came mainly from children's entertainment. From 2001 the Wetten, dass ..? -The program for children is no longer produced because the Saturday evening program featured an uncompetitive children's bet.

International offshoots

reception

In the novel The Weather 15 Years Ago (2006) by Wolf Haas , a key scene plays in a Wetten, dass ..? -Broadcast. The main character Vittorio Kowalski - who is invited as a competition candidate - knows all the weather conditions in the Austrian holiday resort of Farmach - since he found his first great love there - and is reminded of this time by Gottschalk's questions.

Bet that..? was considered one of the last great German Saturday evening shows .

Audience ratings

Germany

The show Wetten, dass ..? Due to its high ratings in the past, it was repeatedly compared to a campfire , in front of which the whole family gathered in the evening and the next day the whole country discussed the bets and guests. After the show was very successful in the early years, an annual average of more than 20 million viewers was achieved three times in a row between 1985 and 1987. The most-watched edition of all time ran on February 9, 1985 and had 23.42 million viewers. Despite a higher population, this number was not reached even after reunification .

After Gottschalk's takeover, Wetten, dass ..? continued viewership averaging between 16 and 18 million. On January 6, 1990, 20.95 million viewers followed the program from Wiesbaden . With the takeover by Wolfgang Lippert, the market shares continued to decline. While Gottschalk was still able to show 60% to 70% towards the end, the programs moderated by Lippert were below 50% for the first time. The low point at that time was the broadcast on September 18, 1993 with 12.86 million viewers. The peak values were 15 million viewers.

Even after Gottschalk's return, the previous audience numbers were no longer achieved, but for more than ten years the show had a constant market share of 40% to 55%. The issues of November 1995 (17.86 million with 52% market share) and March 1999 (15.79 million), in which Michael Jackson was a guest, as well as the appearance of the then Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in February 1999 (18.06 million) belong to the most viewer programs of the 1990s.

After 2000, the number of viewers fell sharply. The last time more than half of all television viewers saw the program was on December 6, 2003 with a 51.6% market share. The 2004/05 season had an average of 13.66 million viewers, while in 2008/09 only 9.97 million tuned in. Bet that..? benefited for many years from the fact that the competing stations showed a less attractive counter-program, as they did not expect high ratings anyway. The RTL show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? paused with the Saturday edition at that time, for example, on the dates on which Wetten, dass ..? took place. On March 31, 2007, Deutschland sucht den Superstar was the first to broadcast a larger show as a competing program, and for the first time the market share of the ZDF program was 33.5% below the 40% mark.

Audience ratings since the first broadcast with Markus Lanz on October 6, 2012

Market shares of over 40% became increasingly rare from 2007 onwards, and audience numbers in the double-digit million range only occurred in a few cases from 2008 onwards. A quota high in the meantime was reached with the change of moderator from Gottschalk to Lanz. Gottschalk's farewell program saw 14.73 million (46%), Lanz's debut 13.62 million (43.7%).

Shortly before the broadcast of June 8, 2013 from Palma de Mallorca, several guests canceled and had to be replaced by others. The show had registered a negative record with 6.74 million viewers and was also heavily criticized on several points. ZDF show boss Oliver Fuchs then decided to reorganize the content and organization. Another low in the quota was reached on February 22, 2014 with the broadcast from Düsseldorf. With 5.85 million viewers, the show set a new record low; the market share was 19.3%.

On April 5, 2014, at the end of the 212th edition of Wetten, dass ..? announced that three more editions of the show will be broadcast. "The decline in the number of viewers shows that viewing habits have changed and the format has lost its appeal," said program director Norbert Himmler , explaining the decision. The effort for such a big show is no longer in proportion to the audience response. After the all-time low in audience ratings in the previous show, the show saw 6.84 million viewers on April 5, representing a market share of over 23%.

In the 213rd edition on October 4, 2014 Wetten, dass ..? 5.48 million viewers, which is the record low. The market share was 19.8%.

On November 8, 2014, the show just missed another negative record. Bet that..? was able to gain 20,000 people in relation to the October issue and thus reached 5.49 million viewers with a market share of 18.8%.

The last edition on December 13, 2014 reached a further 9.27 million viewers, which corresponds to a market share of 32.5%.

Switzerland

The most popular program on Swiss television between 1985 and 2015 was Wetten, dass ..? - April 12, 1986 edition. It reached 1.829 million viewers. In general, Wetten, dass ..? an audience of millions in the 1980s. In the year it was discontinued in 2011, the rate was 498,000 viewers.

Criticism of Lanz

In the online edition of the FAZ in January 2014, Oliver Junge criticized Markus Lanz's style of moderation: “So it is not the supposed Lanz's impoliteness that is the problem, but quite the opposite: his niceness. It is a niceness of desert-wide wasteland. "

Dieter Thomas Heck , long-time presenter of the ZDF hit parade , blames Lanz for the end of the ZDF classic: "I'm sure that with Thomas Gottschalk or Frank Elstner the ratings would not have fallen as with Lanz and the show would go on".

Image judged: “You don't become an entertainer, you are. It's not Markus Lanz, he's a journalist. And perfectionist. Means: not spontaneous, but nerd. [...] Lanz seemed like a foreign body in his own show. He was not authentic, his laughter was tense, the uncertainty grew, the slip of the tongue increased. "

Awards

The show Wetten, dass ..? has received many different awards and can also look back on a nomination for the 1997 Grimme Prize .

Protests

The broadcast was used several times as a platform for protests.

In December 1984, environmental activists ran in front of the camera in Bremen with a banner saying “Don't bet - save the Danube floodplains ”. When these had almost been dragged out of the camera area by folders, Elstner stepped in with the words “Nobody is kicked out of my studio!” . The demonstrators were allowed to briefly present their concerns and then - as previously negotiated - left the stage without hesitation. The poster was addressed to the then Austrian Chancellor Fred Sinowatz , who was a guest sponsor.

In January 1994 two environmental activists threw a banner from the ceiling of the Linz hall with the inscription Umweltsaalwette . Gottschalk: “Have you been up there longer? Since the beginning of the show? Just imagine if they would have spat on my head. "

In October 2004 there was tumult from the audience. While Gottschalk took off the uncomfortable shoes of the actress Alexandra Maria Lara , a spectator suddenly yelled over and over again: Thomas, repent . It was about Andreas Roy, who by then had already had a criminal record for multiple disruptions in church services and art exhibitions and who was banned from entering German churches. Three security guards struggled to lead the heavy Roy out of the hall as he was clinging to an iron railing. Gottschalk called to the disturber: “As long as you don't stop chatting, I won't stop either. And unlike you, I have a microphone. "

Allegation of surreptitious advertising

For years, products were placed in the program for advertising purposes. Christoph Gottschalk , as managing director of Dolce Media, decided on access to the program. Among other things, electricity providers (for several hundred thousand euros per shipment), vehicle manufacturers and telephone providers were advertised. In addition to Christoph and Thomas Gottschalk, ZDF was also involved in Dolce Media. In minutes of a cooperation agreement concluded on September 18, 2009 with the electricity provider Teldafax , Dolce Media specified the content of announcements, presentations and films, which were largely implemented. According to its own information, the ZDF later discontinued the collaboration and presented new rules in March 2013. Among other things, no more cars would be raffled. The ZDF rejected allegations of inadmissible surreptitious advertising.

Colored pencil bet

In the 48th broadcast on September 3, 1988, Bernd Fritz , editor of the satirical magazine Titanic , snuck into the broadcast under the pseudonym Thomas Rautenberg . Fritz claimed that he could tell the color of crayons by their taste.

The actual Thomas Rautenberg, a graphic artist from Munich, invented the bet and used it to apply for the show. When the bet was accepted, the Titanic reader turned to the magazine because he did not want to place the bet himself.

After Fritz won the bet, he admitted the fraud on the show. However, he did not explain how he had proceeded, but referred to the next issue of the magazine. There he admitted to having peeked under the rim of his glasses. In the following broadcast, Gottschalk therefore took up the incident again in the opening words: “He could have had it easier. One sentence would have been enough. What is he doing instead? Four weeks later, write 14 pages in a magazine that nobody reads. ”However, this issue is still the magazine's best-selling.

The competition sponsor was the actor Jürgen Prochnow .
