Celine Marie Claudette Dion , CC , OQ [ seˈlin maˈʁi kloˈdɛt djɔ̃ ] (born March  30, 1968 in Charlemagne , Québec ) is a Canadian singer . With over 250 million records sold (including around 195 million albums), she is one of the world's most successful pop singers .

Career

Beginnings and first successes

Céline was born as the youngest of the fourteen children of Adhémar Dion and Thérèse Tanguay and grew up in poor conditions. Her father was a forest worker before he went into business for himself with a small hotel.

In 1980 her mother and brother Jacques composed the song Ce n'était qu'un rêve, which they sent to the manager René Angélil . He relied on her talent and took out a mortgage on his house to finance her first album. In 1981 Dion released her first long-playing record in her native French , La voix du bon dieu (The Voice of God), which made her famous in Québec.

In October 1982 she took part in the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo for France , and for her homeland Canada, the later very successful singer Bryan Adams started. With the title Tellement j'ai d'amour pour toi , she won the Best Song Award and became known outside of Canada. In 1983 she was the first Canadian female artist to receive a gold record in France for the title D'amour ou d'amitié . In 1987 she produced the album Incognito, which went double platinum in Canada and sold 500,000 copies worldwide.

With the support of Swiss composers and songwriters Atilla Şereftuğ and Nella Martinetti , she took part in the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin in 1988 for Switzerland . With the title Ne partez pas sans moi, whose music was by Şereftuğ and text by Martinetti, she won by just one point over the British Scott Fitzgerald .

International breakthrough

By the late 1980s, Dion was already a successful singer in Canada and France. By the age of 20 she had already released 14 albums (eleven in Canada and three in France) and received a total of 15 Félix Awards as well as three platinum and four gold records. In the USA , however, hardly anyone knew her. This was mainly due to the fact that the Canadian had only published French-language albums up until then and these were hardly noticed in the USA. Because of this, she recorded her first English-language album entitled Unison , which was released in Canada and the United States in 1990 and worldwide in 1991. The first single Where Does My Heart Beat Now was her first English-language hit, which reached number 4 on the US charts . She received platinum for Unison in the US and seven platinum in Canada.

At the Félix Awards ceremony in 1990 , when she was to receive the award for the best English-speaking artist , she made it clear that she still did not feel like an English-speaking singer : she refused on the grounds that she was a French-speaking singer and would be always stay. In 1991 she released an album under the title Dion chante Plamondon in Canada and Des mots qui sonnent in France, in which all titles were written by the Canadian composer Luc Plamondon . The album went double platinum in both francophone markets, France and Québec.

Dion achieved her real worldwide breakthrough in 1992. In a duet with Peabo Bryson , she sang the title song Beauty and the Beast for the Disney cartoon of the same name, Beauty and the Beast . Not only was the single a bestseller in the US, it also became Dion's first top 10 single in the UK. The producers Alan Menken and Howard Ashman received for the title in addition to several Grammys and the Golden Globe in 1992 the Oscar for "Best Song"; Dion and Peabo Bryson won their first Grammy in 1993 in the category “Best Performance by a Duo or Group with Singing - Pop”.

In 1992 she released her second English-language album, Celine Dion , which also featured Beauty and the Beast . With If You Asked Me To the album contained another US top five single. Five of the 14 titles are by Diane Warren ; With this Tear was written by Prince for Dion. The album was sold around five million times worldwide; including almost three million times in the USA (double platinum) and over a million times in Canada (diamond).

Rise to world star

Dion had her first number one hit in the United States in 1994 with the ballad The Power of Love, a cover version of Jennifer Rush's 1980s hit of the same name . The single also became number 1 in Australia and landed in the UK's top five. It sold over two million copies worldwide, and Dion was nominated for a Grammy and the American Music Awards . The Power of Love was a single from the album The Color of My Love , also released in 1994 , which was a worldwide success with over 16 million records sold. The single Think Twice , released shortly thereafter, was a huge hit in the US and around the world; a number one hit in the UK, number 2 in Australia and her first top 20 single in Germany. At the same time, her album The Color of My Love also topped the British album charts. In the 1993 romantic comedy Sleepless in Seattle , Dion can be heard in a duet with Clive Griffin and entitled When I Fall in Love, a cover version of the classic by Nat King Cole . This single was only released in the US, while Dion was able to celebrate another top 10 hit in the UK with the release Only One Road . In 1994 she married her manager, René Angélil, who was 26 years her senior.

Despite the success with an English-language album, Dion recorded her next album D'eux again in French a year later . The titles were produced and written by the French composer Jean-Jacques Goldman . D'eux became the best-selling French language album of all time. In France it was at the top of the album charts for 44 weeks; it sold over four million copies and was the first French-language album in the UK to receive a gold record. The single releases Pour que tu m'aimes encore and Je sais pas also took first place in France and also made it into the charts in various non-French-speaking countries.

The success of both albums was exceeded again with the album Falling into You , released in 1996, with more than 32 million copies sold. Dion was in the top 10 of the US album charts for 59 weeks with Falling into You , only Michael Jackson with Thriller and Alanis Morissette with Jagged Little Pill achieved this before . In the UK, the album was in the charts for almost four years at 184 weeks. Falling into You not only reached number 1 in the USA, Great Britain, France, Australia and many other countries, but also won five times gold in Germany.

Not least the single releases made the album a great success: on the one hand Because You Loved Me from the film Up Close , another US number 1 single and a long-running hit in Germany (9 months in the charts and gold status), then the written by Meat Loaf - / Bonnie Tyler -producer Jim Steinman coming bombastic rock ballad it's All Coming Back to Me Now, No. 2 in the US and No. 3 in the UK and finally the sparingly arranged, almost exclusively from the piano accompanied All by Myself, a Another cover song and US top five and UK top 10 hit. In Great Britain she was also successful in the singles charts with the extracts Call the Man and the title track of the album. The music video for It's All Coming Back to Me Now ranks sixth among the most expensive videos of all time, with production costs of US $ 2.3 million.

The successful publications were followed by major appearances. At the opening ceremony of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta (USA) Dion sang the specially composed title The Power of the Dream . She was able to build on the success of Falling into You with the album Let's Talk About Love , released in 1997 . The album was recorded in London , New York and Los Angeles ; A number of well-known singers and composers were involved in the production. Dion sang duets with Barbra Streisand (Tell Him), the Bee Gees (Immortality) and the opera singer Luciano Pavarotti (I Hate You Then I Love You) . The Beatles producer George Martin produced The Reason, written by Carole King , and Bryan Adams wrote the theme song Let's Talk About Love . The album became a number one hit in almost every country and sold more than 31 million copies. The pre-release single Tell Him in a duet with Barbra Streisand was another top 10 success in Great Britain, France and Australia.

Dion's biggest single hit was a track she didn't want to sing originally. My Heart Will Go On was composed and written by James Horner and Will Jennings for James Cameron's film Titanic (1997). Dion was initially less than enthusiastic about the title that Horner played for her and her manager René Angélil. However, her manager decided that she should sing him. It is noteworthy that only the demo recording was used for the radio version of My Heart Will Go On and the album Let's Talk About Love, on which the title is also included. The title became a number one hit in Canada, the US, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland, among others. The single had the greatest success in France and Germany, where it was number 1 for 13 weeks each. In Germany, My Heart Will Go On was in the top 10 for 21 weeks, with interruptions the title was placed for a total of 39 weeks and received quadruple platinum for over 2 million copies sold. Dion received another Bambi for one of the most successful singles in the history of the German record industry. The title was also awarded an Oscar at the 70th Academy Awards in 1998 . The third single, Immortality, with the Bee Gees became another bestseller and reached number 2 and platinum status in Germany.

In 1998 Dion released another French album called S'il suffisait d'aimer , which, like D'eux, was written by Jean-Jacques Goldman. Although it has been sold around four million times worldwide, its success was largely limited to French-speaking countries. Many of Dions' hit singles from the 1990s were written by Diane Warren , best known for her ballads . Dion also worked as a songwriter and co-writer, for example with her song Don't Save It All for Christmas Day from the 1998 Christmas album These Are Special Times . The animated film Quest for Camelot features the Oscar-nominated title The Prayer, a duet with Andrea Bocelli . The album's most successful single was I'm Your Angel, a duet with R. Kelly , which topped the American charts for six weeks.

In 1999 Dion released her first English-language best-of album All the Way ... A Decade of Song , which presented nine of her greatest hits and seven new titles. The track If Walls Could Talk was written by Robert John Lange , the background vocals were sung by Shania Twain . All the Way ... A Decade of Song was number 1 on the album charts in almost every country and sold around 20 million times worldwide. The album's most successful single was That's the Way It Is, written by Max Martin , another top 10 hit on both sides of the Atlantic. With the release of the album, Dion announced that he would be taking a longer break to have more time for her private life.

Successful comeback

In March 2002 she reported back with the album A New Day Has Come , which picked up at number 1 in 17 countries where she left off. The single of the same name had become another top 10 hit in Great Britain and Germany. Another release, I'm Alive, became the title track for the movie Stuart Little 2 and, especially in Germany and Scandinavia, a top five hit for months.

In 2003, Dion was on the soundtrack to Mona Lisa's smile . She also released another studio album; One Heart was number two on the US charts and reached the top 10 in the UK, Germany and Australia. However, it couldn't stay on the international charts as long as its predecessor, and sales were lower. One of the reasons was that she no longer went on tour, but only performed five times a week at the Caesars Palace Hotel in Las Vegas from March 2003 to December 2007 . The show was so successful that the contract was extended early and a villa was built for it on Lake Las Vegas . In December 2007, her last show for the time being was performed at Caesars Colosseum. In 2004, in collaboration with Anne Geddes , Dion released the CD Miracle , which contains multilingual music for children.

Dion in Montreal in 2008 during her Taking Chances World Tour

In April 2007 she sang a duet with Elvis Presley in a charity episode of American Idol Gives Back . For this purpose, Dion had rehearsed with a double, during the broadcast Presley was virtually created as her duet partner. Her French-language album D'elles was released in May 2007 , the first single Et s'il n'en restait qu'une (je serais celle-là) of which was released in February and entered France at number 1. In November 2007, another English-language album was released under the title Taking Chances . It reached the top 10 in numerous countries including the US, France, the UK and Germany. In December 2007 their live DVD A New Day… Live in Las Vegas was released .

After almost ten years, Dion went on tour again in 2008, which she opened in Johannesburg at the request of Nelson Mandela . She performed in Paris, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, among others. In August 2008, Dion was at the Laval University, the honorary doctorate conferred the music. The award in the course of the 400th anniversary of Québec honored her services as an internationally successful artist and her social commitment. Between March 2011 and January 2016, Dion performed again at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

In November 2012, her French-language album Sans attendre was released; the first single Parler à mon père was released in July. The second single, Le miracle, was also released in November 2012, Qui peut vivre sans amour? followed in March 2013.

In November 2013, the English-language album Loved Me Back to Life was released, which reached number one on the iTunes charts in 44 countries. Producers included Ne-Yo and Babyface . The album includes a duet with Stevie Wonder . The first single with the title song was released in September 2013. Other single releases were Breakaway , Incredible (Duet with Ne-Yo) and Water and a Flame . In November Dion gave a series of concerts in Belgium and France. In May 2014, the box set Celine une seule fois / Live 2013 was released. The album contains a video recording of the Céline ... une seule fois concert on July 27, 2013 in Québec .
