Beauty and the Beast is a song composed by Alan Menken in 1991 . The text is by Howard Ashman . In the version sung by Angela Lansbury , it was used as a movie song for the Disney film Beauty and the Beast . The song won both an Oscar for Best Song and a Golden Globe . It also received a Grammy for best movie song. In the British charts, the song reached number nine.
The song describes the relationship between the two main characters in the film, Belle and the Beast . In the film it is sung by Dame Angela Lansbury , who lends her voice to the character of Mrs. Potts. For the authors and composers, Lansbury, who is one of the best interpreters of classical musicals, was a dream cast.
The song was used in a version sung by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson for the film's soundtrack. Dion also released the song on one of their albums. Dion and Bryson also performed the song as a trio with Dame Angela Lansbury at the 1992 Academy Awards.
The song is also used in the musical of the same name, sung by Beth Fowler in the original musical .
The song has been covered several times, for example by Peter Hofmann and Jana Werner in a German version, Garou and Camille Lou in a French version. Other French-language versions are by Charles Aznavour and Liane Foly as well as Patrick Fiori and Julie Zenatti . The group Suburban Legends also covered the song.
When the film was released in 2017, Ariana Grande and John Legend covered the theme song.
