Alan Menken
Alan Irwin Menken (born July 22, 1949 in New Rochelle , New York ) is an American composer . He won eight Academy Awards for his work on the Disney films Arielle, the Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992) and Pocahontas (1995).
Menken received further nominations for the musical design of the films The Little Shop of Horror (1986), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), Hercules (1997), Verwünscht (2007) and Rapunzel - Neu gepehnt (2010). There are also numerous nominations and awards at the Golden Globe Awards .
He is also known for his extensive musical activities. One of his latest projects is the musical King David , which he wrote with the lyricist Tim Rice .
Life
Alan Menken spent his childhood in New Rochelle, New York, and even then had considerable musical skills. He learned the piano and violin while in high school, but it wasn't until he finished college at New York University that he was able to realize his dream of becoming a professional musician. When he later worked at the Lehmann-Engel-Musical-Theater, he developed a passion for arranging musicals. He enthusiastically acquired the knowledge necessary to compose a musical and met his long-time companion Howard Ashman .
Alan Menken lives in New York State with his wife Janis, a former ballet dancer, and their two children.
