Howard Ashman

Howard Ashman (born May 17, 1950 in Baltimore , Maryland , † March 14, 1991 in Manhattan , New York City ; actually Howard Elliott Gershman ) was an American writer and producer for drama , film and musicals .

Life

Howard Ashman went to New York in 1974 and began writing plays alongside his work in a publishing house.

In 1982 he worked with the composer Alan Menken on the musical Der kleine Horrorladen (original title Little Shop of Horrors ), one of the most successful Broadway productions.

He then worked a lot with Alan Menken, especially for Disney films, with Menken composing the film music and Ashman writing the lyrics. Together with Alan Menken, Ashman received several other awards, two Grammy Awards , two Golden Globes and two Oscars . Two days after receiving the Oscar for the song Under the Sea , Ashman announced that he had AIDS . Despite his serious illness, Ashman continued to work. Ashman received his second Academy Award posthumously and received it from his partner Bill Lauch. Howard Ashman died on March 14, 1991 at the age of 40.
