1989's Under the Sea is a song from the movie Ariel, the Mermaid . It was written by Alan Menken (music) and Howard Ashman (text) and can be assigned to the Calypso . In the film, Sebastian tries to convince Arielle that life in the sea is much nicer than life in the country and that she should give up her plans to go there. The song is sung by Samuel E. Wright , Sebastian's spokesman. In the German dubbing, the song is called Unter dem Meer or Below in the Sea . In the first German dubbing from 1989 Joachim Kemmer took over the vocal part, in the second from 1998 Ron Williams .

Under the Sea won the Oscar and the Golden Globe , both in the Best Movie Song category . The song also won a Grammy for Best Song Written For Film or Television.

The film version of the song was used as a single with the artist Sebastian C. released. This single hit the UK charts for two weeks. The best position was 90th place.
